With the assistance of the above graphic, we went over the concept of a growth mind-set with our players. I thought it was a very valuable exercise. It was interesting to watch players recognize when their behavior (or a team mates behavior) started to slip into the fixed mind-set category. I think it's fair to say that most successful programs have instilled and established a growth mind-set culture....while struggling programs tend to fall in to the fixed mind-set category. I started my coaching career at a powerhouse program, then moved to a struggling program on the verge of folding, and now we've helped build that once struggling program into a winner....as I reflect back on the process and compare/contrast the teams it becomes glaringly obvious that developing a growth mindset is critical for success in football. I know these ideas are nothing new, but seeing it packaged and explained this way has really opened my eyes and helped reinforce its importance.

So for those who are inclined toward a fixed mind set, what is it you do to promote a growth mind set?

So for those who are inclined toward a fixed mind set, what is it you do to promote a growth mind set? Great question. I actually did a brief presentation at our recent PD day for the teachers in our school on how we apply growth mind-set principles to athletics and how that can be transferred over to the classroom. Here were the main points from my PowerPoint slides: WHAT CAN COACHES, TEACHERS, & PARENTS DO TO HELP?- Build self-esteem and confidence - Growth Mindset characteristics directly linked to confidence/self-esteem The Power of Language- Student-athletes are not allowed to say “I can’t” unless it is followed by “yet” - Praise effort not talent - Praising ability can negatively influence - Learn to hear fixed mindset voice: - "Do I have the talent?" ANSWER = I can learn if I work hard - "What if I fail?" ANSWER = The most successful people fail the most. Failure is a necessary component of learning! - "Why even try?" ANSWER = Not trying IS failing!

I am currently reading the "Mindset" book and wondering if you have any other sources. Great stuff.

Great thread that puts a "visual" to what many of us are always trying our best to accomplish!
