Very good season for our kids. Took a couple of years to change the culture and get a good staff in place and get some real leadership going. Had to weed out some selfish players and put an end to free lancing and low football IQ.
Pick a direction and go. Lead, follow or get the @#$%^ out of the way.

Was it just a matter of setting high expectations & not compromising those expectations as a coach/coaching staff?

How did you increase their football IQ? What do you feel is the greatest thing that your program did to turn the program around? What kind of off-season things did you guys do is a program?

Football IQ is raised several ways.
Film study and chalk talk. That's the main way. We watch our own game film for bout 2 hours each week. We also watch the bad guys film and talk bout what they intend to do.
Run fits

Lifting during the season- heavy, 3 - 4 days a week, one hour each lift.
Cut down on going to the ground, keep guys healthy.
Reduce coverages and simplify everything.
Tackle every day. Sled every day.
Coaches on the same page frosh-JV-Varsity
Captains are chosen based on off season , not athleticism.
Consequences/accountability/discipline
You do what you are coached to do or suffer the consequences. competition for positions and playing time. "the three man rotation" at each spot.
yes, high expectations and don't waver.

You probably implemented the FACEMELTER. It has to be because you are a guru. There is no other way to win.

Congrats. What size of school? I have about 100 kids 9-12, traditionally poor program. My 3rd year just over and I am not sure we are making much progress. Took a step forward in year 2 and a step back this year but we do return most of our talent and harder workers. Tradition of good athletes not staying out and / or just not very invested. Footaball IQ is not great, but I don't think that's why... more of an issue where it just isn't a big deal to the kids compared to my previous school. When you say lead, follow, or get out of the way, can you elaborate? What do you do with a kid who is more talented, but doesn't come to off season things, or doesn't work hard in the wt room or practice when he is there?

When you say lead, follow, or get out of the way, can you elaborate? What do you do with a kid who is more talented, but doesn't come to off season things, or doesn't work hard in the wt room or practice when he is there? EFFORT in season is non negotiable. Video tape things so that you have your own back, but you must hold players accountable for poor effort. I believe that some kids are improperly motivated. you first seek to inspire, if that doesn't work, you must use fear of consequences as proper motivation. If that doesn't work, you simply do not play those kids , you cant afford to.
We had several athletic kids who would only do what they were coached to do when they felt like it or when the level of competition predicted a win. When a loss was looming, the coaching went out the window. Film session would get colorful and we had to hold players accountable. When we tired of showing players how their selfishness was hurting the team, the coaches and how it became evident that the player would just continue to make excuses, changes needed to happen. Less athletic kids, more disciplined and with better drive to do what they were coached to do would have to step in.
Reward effort, investment, commitment, discipline and down play lazy athletes. In a small school, you need those guys, but you also need to make an example out of those guys when they are not performing.
My first year we had several very poor captains. My second year we had several underclassmen as captains and some seniors who were left outside looking in (to the disbelief of them, their parents, they were not handed captain jobs) and in year three, with the message fully in place, COACH MEANS BUSINESS guys feared not doing what is asked.
In year four, guys are chomping at the bit to do what needs to be done.

Coach2013- Great stuff.
When do you show kids film of practice? How do you create competition in practice?
