Watching the Toldeo-NIU game on ESPN. They broke in and said that a Miami football player named Brian Pata (sp?) was shot and killed.
Pretty horrible stuff.

Jeez. That's really awful. ESPN is saying he was shot shortly after leaving the practice facility near an apartment complex. Truely sad.
RIP Bryan Pata

Would never have happened if it weren't for the brawl. Miami U has some responsibility for this players death IMO

Wait a minute. I have no love for Miami but what does the brawl have to do with the shooting?

Rumor has it that it was an FIU player that shot and killed this Miami player...with motive coming from the brawl.
BRawling is the type of culture that is fostered at Miami. Every player should have been kicked off the team that participated in the brawl. Now a player is dead.
At work, I punch a co-worker in the face. I get a 1 week suspension. I come back and shoot a co-worker dead. Employer is partiually responsible.

If this young man was in fact killed by an FIU player, I think it says a lot more about that particular FIU player than it does about Miami football.

On the contrary..
I've actually seen reports that Pata had nothing to do with the brawl. It seems every time they talk about him the words "big-hearted" and "soft-spoken" are used before his name. I know its tough given Miami's year and previous history to overlook incidents from the past, but I think we as spectators should take a wait and see approach to the circumstances surrounding his death. Could have very well been a wrong place wrong time type of thing.

I must ask -- was anyone really surprised by this? I mean, the way you would have been surprised if this had been a Penn State, or Notre Dame, or for that matter a Grambling or Howard player?
Miami has been playing with fire for years in terms of the athletes it recruits to its program -- check Ray Lewis's rap sheet if you don't know what I'm talking about. Thug culture attracts thugs.
Whether the young man who was killed was or wasn't involved in the brawl with FIU is immaterial -- Miami has been asking for an incident like this for years, and excusing the inexcusable for far too long while the team was winning championships.
"As ye sow, so shall ye reap" applies all too well in this situation.
