We are a small school - high school has head coach with two assistants and 2 junior high coaches who are listed as football assistants. The four assistants all make the same $.
What expectations do you have for all of your assistants?

My #1 requirement for my JH coaches are for the kids to HAVE FUN, and to keep them coming out for FB as they get older. We are a small school as well, and have the same # of coaches as you have. I ask the JH coaches to at least have the same numbering system as we do (offensive holes, defensive gaps, passing tree, etc) and to teach the basic fundamentals. Otherwise I allow them to do their thing.

Coacho8 - do your jh coaches participate in summer hs camps and two-a-days? And do they do anything with hs on Friday nights?

The 2 JH coaches I have now: no. I did have a couple a few years ago who were involved with our summer activities, but now I have a young coach (2 years exp) and a father, so I don't expect them to help with summer. I have invited them to help on Friday's if they wish. I give them a clipboard and chart both ours and opponents formations, plays, etc, and look at that at halftime to see if there is anything glaring that we can fix/capitalize on.

we have frosh ball
frosh coaches scout, take stats, work as eyes in the sky at varsity games frosh coaches are varsity assistant coaches, we coach their kids with varsity and they can prepare for their games on Wednesdays.
everyone runs the same system, no tweaks, no artistic flavor and no exceptions.
one program. no egos. if the frosh win, we are all responsible. if they lose, we are all accountable. that holds true for jv and varsity.

I am a varsity Coordinator at the moment, but I was a Jr. high coach at a small school for 2 years. I think the biggest things are have fun #1. Kids have to want to play. AND, we do this on the Freshman and JV team levels as well, EVERY KID PLAYS WHEN THE GAME MATTERS. You can at least hide a kid for a series on defense if you have to, but they should all be allowed to play when the game matters. Each kid should get playing time in both halves. Nothing irritates me more than having a kid quit as a freshman because a coach is trying to win the superbowl. At that level you have no idea who will bust their butts and turn into a stud for you later down the road. Keep them out so I have the most kids possible to choose from at the varsity level. Other than that, they should be using your terminology and schemes to cut down the learning curve in high school. Friday nights, I would leave it up to them. If your a small school they will probably be at the game anyway.

At a small school, the odds of a frosh or soph having to contribute to varsity goes way up. That is why we coach the lowest grades we can coach. They must be ready to make an impact asap and we also keep things simple as can be.

Fundamentals Fun Fundamentals Play them all (not the same amount but you don't know who is going to develop) Fundamentals
As far as camps, if they are getting the same compensation then yes, they should be there.

The four assistants all make the same $. What expectations do you have for all of your assistants? Based on the underlined statement, I would hope that the expectations would be equal for all coaches. If the JR high guys are getting paid the same as other coaches, then the time commitment should be equal as well. However, if Jr High coaches are paid less, I can see where their roles and time commitments could be less depending on their own goals.

Our JH coaches are paid significantly less; therefore roles and commitments aren't what I ask our 2 varsity assistants. But yes, I would agree, if they were paid the same amount, I would ask more of them.

When I was coaching at our middle school, our job was to install the basics of the offense. We had a coaching change at the high school after my 2nd year there and the new coach brought in a new system. We focused on the basics, fun, and winning. We played everybody, kept stuff simple, and won (went 19-0 over the 3 seasons I was there). The last group I coached in 7th and 8th grade played for the state title yesterday, they didn't win, but they are only the 2nd team in program history to make it that far. I always felt like my job was to do whatever I could to get the kids ready for the next level. We knew some kids wouldn't play the next year, or on JV, or on Varsity, but we were always teaching them like they would.
