I get a phone call today from one of my middle school kids...
"Uh, Coach is it ok if i come in around 10 oclock tomorrow?" (practice starts at 8am) " I have to get cleats and the store doesnt open until 9:30"... THE KID AND HIS PARENT(S) HAVE HAD ALL SUMMER TO GET CLEATS... I said "no", come at 8 am just like everyone else.
I got another call, a mom asked me to basically relocate the practice site because "thats too far". I replied "there are 64 boys on the team, your son knows at least half of them, car pool" ...too much.

My favorite excuse for missing the first day of practice is when a kid tells me that they can't practice on the first day (which is always a Wednesday here in Illinois) because their physical isn't until Thursday.
That one kills me...the kids have all summer to get a physical and, on top of that, the town doc offers a high school physical day for $20!

Heard that one too, a bunch in the past. WHen I was in HS we had a sports physical night where two docs came and basically for free (it was like $10) gave a sports physical to you while mom and dad signed all the forms that were needed for the school ans state. I just got a call from a Mom saying she was calling school board members to get me fired because my DC was telling our kids that he was keeping track of "toe tags" when the efense knocked kids out of the game.
The best part was that she would not tell me her name because she did not want me to be mean to her kid, so I hung up on her.

the physicals thing i am used to also...i used a pizza party, TOUCH FOOTBALL, and playbooks to get my kids to show up for physicals (school provides them FREE!) back on June 8th. There were still a few that missed it because they thought "i already got one for baseball" or whatever. I pretty much can write off anyone that doesnt show up this week because My policy is manditory make up conditioning for any and all missed practices, any reason. unexcused absenses get twice as much though. funny, alot fewer "planning for this vacation for a long time" phone calls this week than in years past.
