Our varsity has home, away, and two sets of alternate jerseys. I don't get the decision to get them. Can someone sell me on the benefits of these versus something like an end zone camera?

Personally, I see none that make them worthwhile. I think they are a waste of money.
If you really reach to find some benefits, you can say the kids like them, they allow you to make certain games seem "special," and they save a little wear and tear on the regular jerseys. If you have gray and wear them on the road, they hide dirt better than white.
Even if the kids like them, they are nowhere near an efficient use of funds, though. My last school, as broke as we were, had a HC who'd sprang for black jerseys because he thought they looked cool. The kids fell in love with them and refused to wear the school's primary color jerseys, but we could have really used some dumbells, bags, new helmets, or hand shields instead.

While something like an end zone camera would be beneficial, it's the players team and nothing gets them excited like some nice alternate jerseys for your rivalry game or homecoming

I like the teams that warm up in their regulars, go and change into their alternates, and proceed to get their asses kicked.
Really they just get the kids excited. I think they're pretty cool too. Definitely better uses for your money though.

Our kids love ours, we are Orange and black and we have a white, black and Orange jersey. We are getting a gray set after this year. Benefit is you don't wear your jerseys out near as fast because you wear them less. The other benefit is you look really cool and that's never bad. Now I would spend money to make you better on the field first but if you have those things why not get jerseys

Positively an absolute waste of good money for no return. Colleges use this as a recruiting tool, where does this fit into HS football?
Now the colleges are having 'alternative' helmets.... is this your next monetary outlay?
If your jerseys are crap after the season, maybe you reconsider your vendor/brand.
What's wrong with having pride in who you are? I thought we were about teaching kids how football can take them places they can't take themselves..... sheeeesh

Let's be honest with all of the options kids have for things to do in their spare time many of us have to recruit kids. If our flashy alternate uniforms gets one of those basketball or baseball kids to come out for football they just might be money well spent. I also think that wearing them gives players a physchological edge. They look good which gives them confidence, which is never a bad thing. We spent a lot of money on a set of gray uniforms this year that our players love them and I don't think anyone regrets the investment for one second. I also agree that having multiple sets of uniforms does save wear and tear. Our home uniforms have been worn half as many times this season and washed half as many times. In theory that means each set should last twice as long, which in the long run means it's not that bad of an investment.

I hate that football has become this but currently in my conference we are in an arms race with facilities, uniforms, and just about anything else you can think of... We have major recruiting going on in the area and our state association does absolutely nothing if you violate recruiting rules so it is basically like having no rules. I have to recruit the kids from my district feeder schools to come to our school then I have to get them to want to play football.
I was a high school player not to long ago... Football is what motivated me not the uniforms, facilities, cleats, gloves, or team packs, but the world is so much different and kids are so much different. We live in the hype video world!

My HS head coach had students buy their practice jerseys each year. For years, school administration had strict rules about what was acceptable colors for jerseys--you know, simple things like making sure the jersey actually is a school color. Eventually, new administration led to new rules. Once he got the clearance, he upgraded the quality of practice jerseys, changed the color to black, and then started letting the teams wear them for some games. Initially, it was the last home game of the year, but I think it's been expanded now under his successor.
If the school has the kids pay for jerseys, like that HS coach did, then I see no problem. Let the kids waste their money. If he's using team funds to cover it, that's silly. He could at least have limited himself to only one alternate jersey.

Not sure if anyone already said this but...
For the same reason that Oregon does it, it attracts more players to your program. In our district a team that has been at the bottom year in and year out, is in the playoff mix.... the biggest difference, many new faces.
Kids are going there because they want to look cool, not only do they have alternate home and away jerseys/pants , they have alternate helmets. Even the coaches have all the cool gear; shirts, shoes, glasses...
I mean it sounds ridiculous to say this but they are getting better coaches also not just kids, because they are dropping money on these items, and everyone is now noticing the regular 1-9 maybe 2-8 team fighting for a playoff spot at 5-4.
So, is it the cool looking gear that attracted these kids, my signs point to yes, a kid that I coached a year ago which I was expecting to be my starting TE, and an OLB for us, went there because my family "moved" but when I spoke with him he said "coach, if I am gonna go 5-5 and not make the playoffs, Id rather go 2-8 and look good doing it."

bigspicy, I'd argue that the real reasons for that team's success and improvement in numbers has less to do with the alternate jerseys and more to do with all the money they are now pumping into that program. The jerseys are just an aspect of that, not the cause. We have a team like that near me. In 36 years as a school, they were a lifetime .225 winning percentage and had like 3 winning seasons. A few years back, it was decreed they'd have a winning team. They fired all their assistant coaches and intentionally blew up their program to get an excuse to run off the guy who'd recently got them to 4-6 territory. Then they hired a pair of brothers from a much more successful program to come in and run things. One of them has no teaching duties besides weights, while the other one only teaches 2 non-tested math classes a day. Then they let them hire a bunch of hand picked assistants, built them a new weightroom and locker room with top notch equipment, hired a professional video producer to make a flashy "documentary"/recruitment film for YouTube, etc. They're 18-4 the past 2 seasons after doing this and the community treats those coaches like Nick Saban and Bear Bryant rolled into one. Yes, they have 4 alternate jerseys and the kids get excited over it, but I don't think the uniforms are what made them better.

I have to order new uni's this year for my middle school team, should I admit that I looked into the possibility of 2 different home jerseys?

As some others have said, I think there's a lot of better ways to spend money on your program than alternative uniforms. Now if you have money to burn and are looking for an excuse to splurge and spend it, maybe so. But if your budget requires you to prioritize, then I would never consider something like alternative uniforms.

End zone cam... I wish!
Our next home jersey set will be the Boise style gray uniforms. AD and I both want gray to be incorporated more to our royal blue and kelly green.

Definitely better uses for your money though. We did that. Our kids came out with Grey and Pink jerseys for breast cancer awareness and proceeded to get thumped. All they were concerned with was how they looked during pre-game. I despise the jerseys for that reason.

They came out and warmed in their normal red unis. Went back inside about a half hour before kickoff. Came out in all black. The crowd went wild because nobody even knew they existed. Then we thumped those bit**es by 60 points. It was glorious.

I think they could have been a great tool for attracting kids to football, but they were a huge distraction for a team trying to learn to win. I respect my head coach immensely but in hindsight I think they were a bad idea for the reason listed above.
The game was a trap game to begin with. They were a good team that had lost a few games early. They also are unorthodox in that they rarely ever punt and they kick onside almost every time trying to steal possessions. They got the first onside kick scored, second onside kick and scored. We finally get the ball on play 28. We go 3 and out they go down an score again. We are down 19-0 before we get our first first down. We ultimately lose by 12 points. The bottom line is we were very unfocused at the opening kickoff.

To answer the OP. There isn't a valid "football" reason to get them. But if your program has more money than needs, then it can be fun. The kids eat that kind of stuff up.

Because Black alternate jerseys look cool I'm so tired of black alternate jerseys. Everyone's got them now and they just look generic. Gray can look great... unless you're talking about those monstrosities of uniforms that UCLA wore against Arizona. To go from some of the best looking uniforms in football... to... this... WTF were they thinking!?!?!? At least they don't look like these...

Gray does look good, but it's just the new black. Those UCLA grays were whack. Looked like they stuck some gold foil around the numbers and called it good. Here's a novel idea. WEAR YOUR SCHOOL'S COLORS!!!

rsmith627, with all the different colors people are sticking on "alternate" jerseys nowadays, does anyone even care about school colors anymore? It wouldn't surprise me to find out there's some school out there whose colors are say, blue and silver, but they have red and white "alternate" uniforms they wear at every home game.
