The Tug thread got me to thinking about all the things over the years that I have either built or thought about building in place of buying expensive equipment.
Built a "big ben" after watching a video of Texas Tech using their "Big bertha".. which was a 300lb really wide dummy hanging from a fixed position.. just imagine a heavy bag that was 3 or so feet in diameter and very heavy.. well.. 300lbs..
We created one of these by buying a 5'x10" section of schedule 80 pvc. We then filled this with cheap concrete. We had a fitted bottom end cap that was cemented on. We then placed a top cap on that we drilled 4 holes in and we ran Eye Bolts through and washered and bolted them up to hold the cap on.. we then used these 4 eye hooks to run chain to an attachment point.
We then secured some bedding grade foam.. and lots of it.. we wrapped that puppy with probably 10 layers of 3" foam and duct tape. We put on a layer then tape it so it would stay on.. then put on another layer and wrapped it up tight.. then did two more layers.. I think we did this 5 times..
The result was a very ugly.. but very effective big dummy.. it was big enough that I was a good 2' away from my hands touching when I wrapped my arms around it.
We then had a guy the next year from our ag shop build us a track that was welded to a beam. the beam was attached to two arch ways that were wide enough for players to run through with a wide base. The end was maybe a foot higher than the other side.. so there was a gradual incline that you had to drive the dummy out and up..
It was great!!!
What else have you either built or wanted to build to save the money??

Just had built a QB passing net (somewhat similar to the one offered by Gilman, and used by Southlake). Gilman sells it for $650. We had a very nice one built for about $75.

Passing net (old soccer net with old jerseys tied onto it)
Chutes made out of PVC pipe (quality is a big trade off)
OLine footwork / step template (PVC pipe fitted together)
OLine boards (2 2x4s put together)
Old firehose for alignment / hole designations (Off / Def)
BEST INVESTMENT in equipment ever? 5 Rubbermaid 55 gal. trashcans at Wal-Mart at $8 a piece......invaluable in working fits on defense.
$30 Martial arts strike pad vs a $150 hand shield.

You can make a weight sled to pull behind when running if you have a good tech ed class. We had our clean platforms built when the old gym got torn up. We used the hardwood and the Tech Ed class made us some nice cleaning platforms.

www.titleboxing.comwww.ringside.comwww.combatsports.comThe best sites for martial arts equipment. I get all most boxing/MMA (just train pretty much on my own for now) stuff from Title, but Ringside/CSI are great as well. They've got a lot of things (pad-wise) that could carry over for football.

HAd a parent who is a welder make me a 25 ft trap chute. I gave him a picture of the one from Rogers and in about a week he pulls in with the thing painted in our school colors and looking and operating (adjustable hieght) just like the one I showed him! Also made us a set of adjustable hieght running ropes about 30 ft long!

DL coach's Ball on a Stick. I've always wondered....are these even relevant? Just asking, because even though I was trained on these and the ball on a string in college, you never really want to be staring at the ball anyway......once the OL moves, flinches, sneezes....you should be teeing off on that sucker...never looking in at the ball.....right?

I'm not sure. Our DL coach in high school coached his guys to watch the ball, but there probably was more to it than that. I wasn't good enough to play defense in high school, so I really can't say. We had a guy at my last job who used to teach his d-linemen to watch the feet of the O-linemen in front of them. The idea was a low landmark would keep the DL pad under the OL and, by seeing which foot the o-linemen stepped with, the d-linemen would have a good read on where the play was going. The funny thing about that ball on the stick is that you just KNOW that the guy who invented it is retired on some beach in the Caribbean sipping on a drink with a little paper umbrellas in it.

I used an old football, a broken hockey stick, and a roll of athletic tape to make my "ball on a stick". This year I will upgrade to duck tape.

bill williams of the fcpga told me one should put an questionare to all the partents regarding there careers. this way when you need something built you call a parent who has the skills.
another coach told me parents will help you if you ask.
the best think I have ever made is to cut two circles out of quarter inch plywood, glue a handy andy glove on them. this makes rec catch the ball with their hands. we also use them for fielding ground balls on the baseball team.

Not sure, but we used to run a QB sneak on the goal line where the only two people who moved were the center and QB. We could score on it from about 4 yards out. I also made an adjustable ropes from PVC Pipe and bungy cords.

When I played in the early 80's, my cup was made out of a styrofoam bowl with electrical tape wrapped all around it. I put it in the little slit in front of my underwear. Well... you asked...

Talk about putting your money where your mouth is! Seriously though folks...
We'll be wearing cheap t shirts with the positions written on them including posiition and/or points of attack, such as the TE2 and G3, so that when they swap into red/blue formation, it takes away the guessing game (in the first three weeks of practice, then remove them.) Also helps for practicing to send in replacements, and overall awareness (in Wing-T.)
