Dear fellow coaches,
I need some advice on this point. We think about going from metallic gold helmets to matte black helmets next season. My biggest concern is that we have to repaint them a couple times during the season because they get scratched so badly that it looks shabby. One thing we need to keep in mind here, we are a team in Germany. About 50% of our players will have gold helmets that need to be painted by a local paint shop. We are not able to buy new helmets that come in matte black for everyone. I appreciate any advice on this topic, also, as I think some of you guys are in programs with matte helmets, pictures how they look after a couple games would help a lot.
Thanks, Coach Stoll.

I don't have any pictures but they're not bad. Of course it's not as good as those that are ordered matte black originally but they eventually would be. But we have never had to get them repainted during the season. Of course our good luck with them may be in part to the fact that we wouldn't knock foam off a root beer the last couple of years.

When you say repaint them, do you have them done by the helmet company? If not, doesn't that void any warranty?, not sure what type of rules there are in Germany about that though.

We get that done by a local paint shop, not a helmet company. It does void all warranty. But it's a little bit different over here as we don't have any official company in Germany to do that kind of stuff. And it's not that big of a deal as every player has to buy their own equipment. And their are actually no rules in Germany, football wise, that would regulate the helmet color. I would highly appreciate if anybody could shot me a photo of their used matte black helmets so I'm able to give a quality recommendation to our teams board.

We have matte maroon and they've held up fine. Riddell does all our painting and reconditioning.
