In preparing for coaching interviews, this is a detail I want to lock down.
For those coaches that have Thursday meals, what types of foods are best? Obviously you want to somewhat carb load, but probably don't want anything that's too upsetting on the stomach.
For those that have a Friday meal, you probably want a protein and faster digesting carbs.
My plan, whenever I get a head coaching job, is to put a personal trainer/nutritionist on staff for reasons as this and educating and assisting our players with the proper diet throughout the year. Where I've been, the coaches don't think about this at all. In fact, there'd be no team dinners at all (kids would go out for pizza Thursday night on their own as a newer tradition) and no breakfast or pregame meal on Fridays...but instead the boosters would spend $5/per kid and give them a 6" sub, chips, cookie, and soda AFTER away games. Backwards, if you ask me.
So, looking for smart ways to have a Thursday evening dinner....6ish, so parents can get there after work....a light but good breakfast Friday morning, and a pregame meal on Friday afternoon, all with the right food choices.
Great post, whomever the OP was!

Thursday night meal is different every week. For instance, last week we had steak and baked potatoes. We've had lasagna in the past. Pre-game meal is light, normally a deli sandwich, or peanut butter and jelly.
We also give out the Gatorade protein shakes in the morning on gameday. Before the game we give them the Gatorade Energy Chews. At halftime they get a cup with peanut butter, banana, and more Energy Chews.
It has seemed to work for us throughout the year.

Not to get off topic, but honey is a great deal to give out at halftime...
We do team meal Friday after school. Light like others have said. Also make them finish a gatorade and water after practice Thursday and at meal on Friday.

The Gatorade shakes & chews are pretty popular with the kids and a great value in the Gatorade packages. I never thought about honey....good call!
What are other correctly nutritious meals to offer? Do any of you have a nutritionist on staff or consult with one?
