Was reading about this in another thread.............
For a couple decades now we have a team meal on Thursdays after practice.
Originally (and still today), it is designed to make sure kids get a meal before game day (dinner is something that I took for granted growing up, but now I see for several of our kids, it is a luxury).
It also has been a source of team building and community.
Just curious how other programs do/don't do the team meal.

We do ours on Friday at 3:00. We play at 7, this way we know that they ate on game day.

Ours is Thursday after practice 5:30 - 6:15. Some of the team moms coordinate and prepare the meals. It's more as a week in review and the start of "game mode" for our guys.
I like the idea of the Friday 3:00 meal though.

Yeah, we do it Friday at 3:00 also. On away trips, parents will prep a meal and we'll usually stop half way to our destination and eat.

We do ours as the pregame meal at 3:30. Usually local churches donate the food and parents (who go to the church) prepare it.
A school I was at before liked to make the meals themed around the opponent at times. If we played a team with a bird for a mascot (like the Falcons) we'd get fried chicken and say it was "Falcon." If we played a school named after Daniel Boone we'd get Moon Pies and call them "Boone Pies." It was cheesy, but it was fun for the kids.

A lot of times, we coaches forget that it's a game and it's supposed to be fun.

We have always done it game day. The Thursday meal is probably more important physiologically though. At my current digs, we have a federal program in place in which we will feed any kid that needs a meal, so there are a set number of sack meals ready to eat/take home every night; we just have to make an honest head count so that the cafeteria staff can prepare the meals ahead of time.
Friday/game day meals are part of the routine to get the kids ready to play well. I wouldn't want to change that but if your kids need to fuel up the day before I would keep doing it. And/or find a way to do it both times.

My current school we do it Thursday night and we have pasta from the Olive Garden. The parents come out to serve it and it's a nice team bonding opportunity. The last school I worked at had a Thursday night potluck meal and then did sack lunches for the kids on game day.

I think it's a good idea. Did it at my previous job because our MLBer's dad owned a restaurant and would host us at their house.
After he graduated some parents kept it up for couple years.
Now we only have Pre-Game meals on Friday that kids pay $30 a season for.
They already have to Pay to Play, buy shoes, pay for camp, bring in money for fund raiser.
Unless somebody was going to donate Thursday dinner, don't think we can ask them for more.
However, this fall many (all?) of Varsity players have been getting together on their own after Thursday practice to go out and break bread together.

We do it every Friday between 3:00-4:00 depending on home/away and usually have a devotion/motivational speaker talk while they are eating. We try to do a few Thursday night meals or some other team building activity throughout the season.

Our seniors have a dinner every Thursday night. On Friday we have a meal at 3:30 the kids can purchase for $6 or bring their own food. We also have a post game meal/snack after games to get them slightly fed after not eating for several hours.

On Thursday nights our QB will usually feed the starting OL at his house. This has gone on for a couple years. As a team we eat on Friday nights before the game at 4pm. If the game is away, but within a close distance we'll move dinner up to 3:30. If the trip is over an hour we will usually eat at a restaurant in the city we are playing. Everyone is always impressed as our kids are well behaved and dressed up (shirt/tie/slacks/dress shoes on game day). They are usually surprised to see a public school dressed and behaved in that manner.

Dubber we do both, depending on home or away. If we are home, Thursday at 5:30 and after school at 3:15. If we are on the road, none on Thursday, meal at 3:15, and something small for the trip home. Our kids are quite similar in terms of socioeconomics, and some of them might not eat after the game until well into the next day. Something we instituted 3 years ago and is still going strong today.

We have a team meal on Thursdays, right after practice. The parents put everything together amongst themselves (who is cooking, when, what, etc.). We're a small team, so logistically it's probably more simple, but I love it and our kids love it. It allows us to ensure everyone is getting a good meal the night before the game and also serves as a great chance for the kids and coaches to get together and chat. We include our junior high team, as well.
I'm hoping we can put together something sustainable for Fridays, too, but we haven't been able to work that out yet.

We did a pre game meal on Fridays, and had the local churches each host one in their banquet hall/youth building type area. We just had to set the parameters of what kind of food and they seemed to enjoy providing it.

For the past few years our seniors have started having a team meal on there own. they do it on Thursday night they take up money from the players and grill and play Xbox. it has become a great team builder they have it at different locations. field house church parking lot or someones house. then on Friday we have a team meal at a local restaurant at 3:00. then after the game we give them a post game meal. we have always tried to make it a family atmosphere for our program and the meals have really helped with that and it help making sure the kids are feed well for the game.

Team meal on game day. Have had some years where we did the Thursday thing too, but that was generally orchestrated by parents/players/boosters. Team meal is done by us, usually through a donor of some sort.
For those that do it on game day, what is your menu (hope I'm not hijacking)? Ours is usually some sort of baked chicken, some type of pasta, generally buttered, or with a very light sauce. We do rolls, a salad, and generally some type of small dessert (nothing heavy).

Ive seen it both ways. I like the Thursday meal after practice at someone's house. Have them feed themselves on Fri. But I totally understand the thought of feeding them Friday. Its also a good way to keep everyone together after school.
We do the Friday meal now.

We go to a player's house each Thursday after practice for a meal and to watch film. The parents handle everything, and the food is always top notch. I went to two high schools as a student-athlete; one, a rural school, they fed us on Fridays (6 inch subway sandwich, some chips, and a drink, I think we paid maybe $20 for the whole year) and at the other, a "city" school, we were on our own on Fridays, but the parents fed us at the school on Thursdays. As both a player and coach I prefer Thursdays, but that is just me.

A different church comes in every Thursday to feed us and give a devotional. We then feed our players at 3:30 and have a restaurant deliver it to our school. The booster club goes to businesses during the summer and gets donations for the food we buy during the season. I've done this at a public school and now a private school.

Pre-game meals at 3:45 on Friday's. We try and have local churches/restaurants sponsor it. The kids love the meal and look forward to it (the coaches do too lol). Tradition started by our previous coach, that was great, so we have continued it.

Day before meal at different parents houses and usually put on by 2 or 3 parents. Coaches don't go. We like the players to be in an informal setting as a whole team w/o us there. We used to go a long time ago but had to scout a lot and missed it sometimes. Feedback from parents and players thought it was better. It has seemed to be a good decision. I always get feedback from the parents after. Only once in 33 years have we had a serious problem.
