Bobby Sutton once said, "The best thing about coaching at Army is the kids always do exactly what you tell them to do. The worst thing about coaching at Army is the kids always do exactly what you tell them to do."
BLB quoted this on another thread. How do you get robot players to just let it GOOOO???

This year we had 2 lbers who fit into this mode. We had them reading keys etc... just like we all do and they bascially sat flat footed and got whacked. Finally we just told them to find the ball and run to the ball and what a difference it made. The one led our team in tackles and the other was 3rd. After the first 3 weeks, niether one was in the top 5 on the team in tackles.

don't over coach. i think sometimes we give our kids too many rules. for example, we never tell a rb where to run, as in what hole. we tell him aim here and do what you do. i think too many rules make kids timid. if they are thinking "i'm gonna get yelled at if i miss the hole", they aren't making plays. you have to have structure and discipline, but you can't over do it. at the end of the day its a game and kids want to make plays. let them have some fun and they will make plays. i believe in the philosophy - play loose, play fast, and play hard.

Couldn't agree more, pegleg.
The Bear wrote "Don't coach caution into good players." Heard Coach Yeoman say at a clinic "99% of the teams in America are over-coached."

It is a "Fine Line" between coaching and over-coaching. We tell our backs to "make the linemen right (correct)". Yes, theres a side or hole to run to but you've got to be able to adjust to the ever changing conditions of the play. Same on defense - you have an assignment, but you still have to be a football player.
