Ditto the editing requirement. You also need to be prepared to work long hours for little financial compensation. You will be the lowest man on the totem pole and receive every crappy job the head coach and coordinators can think of.
Work hard, stay positive, be a team player, and you will eventually get rewarded with, at worst, a great recommendation for your next job, and at best, a full time coaching gig because you have proven yourself as a GA.

Highlight any experience working with scout and special teams, too.

What have you actually done? Are you currently a player? Volunteer coach? Definitely familiarize yourself with editing systems. Anything that shows organizational skills and time management skills. Things that show you have worked under pressure (because you will be the support staff for people whose livelihood is the W/L column.
Actually, now would be the time to start networking. Where do you want to GA at? GA's at the upper echelon levels are usually either ex players, guys with a hook up (ex. Coaches sons), or coaches with years of experience at the HS level who have the financial means to work for free, and the humility to be a copy boy.

No wife or girlfriend, kids, bills, responsibility, or life. Any of these could hurt you while being a GA. Be willing to work like a slave and not be appreciated. You can do it, if you want it bad enough. NETWORK!!!! Put your name out there and tell people your looking to get into coaching and you want to take the GA route.

I don't disagree with any of it, but sometimes it only SEEMS like you're not appreciated. I was a GA and it was one of the best times of my life.
I got into my position by another route--dumb luck. Started out looking for one thing, ended up a GA--the timing was perfect-- a day later and I'd have missed out.

A person that will work hard and won't have an attitude when it comes to doing the dirty work.
