In Missouri practice started Monday, and I think most other states as well. How are the first few days of practice going for you guys? We have great "tshirt and shorts" guys (guys who look like world beaters during testing, walk thru). Curious to what it's going to look like in pads. Team seems to be enthusatic and picking up what we are teaching. No pre season scrimmage scares me as our first time hitting someone else will be our first game. Any suprises? Any new concerns?

First year OC here. We started on Monday as well. Have to say that I am very happy with how things are currently going with our team. As you said, I know it's just t-shirt and shorts right now, but I like the enthusiasm and buzz that we have created around our team.
Myself and the other coaches have put in a big effort to get out and recruit the kids within our school. So far the kids are buying in and there is excitement around our program.

We are a new staff taking over a middle of the pack type of program. So far everything looks great. We were just in shells today.
It's hard for me to say how things are going. I just came from 2 years of a total rebuild where they probably have another two decades of rebuilding ahead, but so far I like what I see. Kids are buying into the culture that we want to build.

Asst HC/OC for a team that had about 27 players last year and no JV. Went 3-7 last year. We have 55 kids out now with more coming, and even though we will be young, we have some seniors in key spots where if we avoid injuries we can be better than most expect us to be. Problem is getting these days in so we can get to the contact.
Like Jasper said we have been recruiting our school and our feeders since February and it's starting to pay off.

So I'm sure you guys were a lot like us Monday and Tuesday. Coming to practice hoping that so and so came out. We had a few surprises that showed up. This is the most kids we have had on the team in a long long time (52 kids.) Stinks is, we can't have full contact until Tuesday and have our first scrimmage on Saturday.

Yes, to a certain extent. A lot of our problems come from not being able to contact the kids or the parents consistently, so we don't know what's going on. Had one of the best players from last year show up today out of the blue, so that was a pleasant surprise, but he's got a tough situation at the same time.
We have scrimmages next week, but our first game isn't until the 29th so our pace has been a little slower than normal. We really are looking at mid-next week to ramp things up 100%.

We've been running our defense vs our offense all summer to get reps. My QB threw seven picks yesterday to the scout defense in thirty reps. I don't know if my defense is the 2000 Ravens incarnate or if my QB is Ryan Leaf incarnate. Leaning towards the latter.
First game is Saturday 8/30.

Second year of taking over a program that is traditionally one of the top programs in our city but has had a rough few years. Offseason and summer was going great. Phenomenal summer. Played great during all 7 on 7's and "won" our summer scrimmage against a team that looked to be far better than us when doing the old eueball test.
Our starting, senior QB who was also a returning all conference LB went in for a meniscus trim. A few days later he goes back for his follow up appointment and the doc says he did a full meniscus repair and the kid is out for six months and now will likely never play again.

Started fall practice last Monday. Putting in a new offense, pistol spread triple option. Usual stuff all week with late physicals, slight injuries, usual startup issues. Looking good the past two nights running mixed JV/Varsity teams. Not enough for each team to scrimmage so we combined the JV with the varsity and divided the teams in a draft. Worked well the past two nights, were careful about matchups, all that. Last night team time was pretty good. Not great, but got a better look from the mixed guys than we would from the subs at each level. Things are working, yards are being gained, tackles are being made, coaches are happy because both teams are getting decent look.
So today we have our team scrimmage. Looked like donkey excrement. Same teams, same players, but they couldn't find their a$$ with both hands. Footwork went to hell for the QB's, got TB's running midline over the guards, OL not moving at all, receivers couldn't catch a cold. Ran 37 offensive plays (and 34 scout offense plays for the defense, did better with that off of cards than with our O) and had 2 bad snaps and 7 dropped snaps. Two coaches asked me how I was able to keep from blowing up. Said it was on video and I'll wait until I see it before I go off. Wasn't much better but at least I could see that the scheme works - there were holes where holes should be, there were reads where the reads should be. The players just didn't want to be there today.
So, will be going over the video, making a 'Top 5' things to work on this week, and prep for the real scrimmage against 3 other teams next Saturday.
Oh yeah, a Sr. OL wasn't there because he was reffing a kiddie soccer game. And another wasn't there because today is the first day of hunting season. Neither informed the HC.

Just had our 1st scrimmage. I am excited with what I saw. We had some silly penalties, but not anything major, typical holding calls and had a kid leaning towards the LOS on his motion as the ball was snapped. We successfully ran it on 2 and got the other team to jump 2-3 times.
Main thing, we ran our uptempo and I had some young kids step up at key positions. We have to clean some things up, but I think we have built a GREAT base to build off of. My QB played DE for us last year, so this was his first game. Going to chart the stats tonight, but thinking he had 250 yards or so, 3 TDS and 2 INTs. The 2 INTs were not bad decisions. I had a sophomore run a route to deep which caused confusion. Supposed to be all 5 yard hitches and read from the outside in. Outside kid ran 10 yards, QB was still throwing to him, but inside guy thought it was to him just a high pass. So he tipped the ball which got intercepted. Other one was the last play of the game, I told him to bomb it deep no matter what lol.

I bet that the horror story I am about to tell will top any here. Okay, maybe not ANY story, obviously there are people who have dealt with actual bad things in their life, but in terms of football related stuff I think this pretty much takes the cake:
We show up to our first day of preseason practice, a mere 20 kids signed up, after our old head coach resigned 3 weeks ago and our new guy came in a week later. The first sign of trouble was when he didn't come to any of the off season lifts of the last two weeks of the offseason that he was officially head coach. The second sign was when we had 14 kids show up to equipment handout. Well, I show up to the locker room an hour early today only to find another assistant waiting. He comes about 20 minutes later, when us and other kids are waiting. We have 16 kids show up to play, only 14 of whom are eligible. So we do our warm up and our stretches, then the new head coach asks us "what do we do now?".....I am not kidding you about that. He had NO PRACTICE PLAN. One of our assistants leads the 4th quarter drill and pursuit, then they get into offensive formations. It is at this time the new head coach informs us that he wants to change our entire offense. So we begin to line up in formations, and he asks us "what do you line up in?". He has NO PLAN for offense! We did not run one offensive or defensive play, we did not do one blocking or tackling related drill, we did not do any individual position time, and then he decides to end practice a half hour early!
The three of us assistant coaches who stayed on (our schools so small that the staff is basically the four of us who come out to coach) were just in absolute shock. What in the hell do we even do? We don't have enough to have a season in all likelihood, but what do we do about this guy in charge? Do we try to go to the AD, should we go somewhere else, what is the right move here? This is my alma mater and I've been coaching here since I started, I don't want to leave, but I also don't want to waste my time on a coach with no plan.

If this was happening at my alma mater then I would be going to speak with the AD. This guy is definitely in over his head and is definitely NOT the right guy for the job. When you only have 14 kids, coaching is going to be even more important. If he can't even be dedicated enough to show up, have a practice plan and the small things such as this, then I would be worried about the safety of the kids. Sounds like its going to be a long season for you guys. Sorry to hear this.

I charted our stats. I am very pleased with our first scrimmage. We had 214 yards passing and 165 yards rushing. Had 9 different kids touch the ball on offense and only had 1 play that was negative in yardage and we changed the blocking scheme on that this week.
This is my first go as an OC and our offense last year was terrible to say the least. Through the first 3 games last season, our defense had more points and almost as many yards as our offense. QB went 11-17 with 3 TDs, 2 Interceptions and 2 drops (see previous post in this thread describing the Ints.)
Have to clean up some of our blocking on the interior, but I am tickled to death with the way our WRs and RBs were blocking for each other. Working hard in film and practice with our QBs this week to see if they can handle some small checks at the LOS, also hoping to start packaging some of our bubble screens with our Inside Zone. I'll let you guys know how this works if/when we get to start doing this.

so far so good i am happy with where we are right now offensively
not a lot of depth at OL but my first 5 is fine, they'll get the job done and keep getting better all year
really happy with our skills, we are loaded at all of our skill positions... not even close, best overall skill talent i have ever coached
4 RBs who would start on most varsity teams an all league level TE with quality backups a good FB
2 game changing WRs with lower level D-1 talent 1 WR who is just great on jump balls a couple other quick slots who can catch the ball and turn it into big plays and be good for us on jet sweeps
defense is putting in a new 3-3 stack... our 3 down guys are struggling some, but the other 8 are so good and athletic they've been able to cover for the DL mistakes
im really excited about this year
scrimmage saturday, and first game the 29th... our non league strength of schedule has stepped up some so we don't play any slouches
there are 3 things that worry me going in to the season
1. OL depth 2. ego... loaded at skills but there's only one ball... im worried some kids will get butt hurt if they arent getting as many touches 3. expectations... we are always the last place pick in league, everyone knows we should be better this year, some buzz starting around us because we have a sophomore with 5 D-1 offers... I am a little worried about how our kids might handle the expectations and pressure

Update on our season. We finished 5 and 5 and ended up missing out on a playoff spot by one game. We had a pretty tough schedule with a few teams above our classification in non league play. First non losing season at that school in 5 years. And our QB? He was able to suit up for the last game of the season. Had him go into the game as a personal protector on punt. Ended up running a fake with him, direct snap and completed a 64 yard pass. Pretty good ending to a season where we showed a lot of growth within our team.

early in the season, the young guy who was hired as OC was being told the TE wasn't blocking well. We asked can ____ play? He says back in mocking, you must be stupid type tone "he's a fullback not a tight end!"
So you tell me how its going.

Came on in January of last year as an OL coach to a state I have never been. Head coach ends up quitting in June after 1 year and a 2-9 record. We hired a new guy one week before the season started...We won the conference at 4-1 and are now 9-3 heading into a second round home playoff game.
