I'm curious to hear what some of you do to create a competitive atmosphere away from actual play on the field -there are lots of drills for that.
I coach summer ball (season done now) and am thinking of holding bi-weekly competition during indy period for things like max pushups, max pushups in X time, fastest 20, 40 yards, max situps, and longest plank.
Posting it along with the depth chart each week so that players know where they stand and that to get better they need to work harder.
I want to find ways to make everything about competition.
What do y'all do?

What do y'all do? We did Competition Thursdays with our linemen this offseason. The thing about competing with weightlifting type of stuff is that after you test them they know who's going to win. We also didn't want to get repetitive and boring so we came up with some strenuous, one-on-one contests. Some of the things that we came up with were: NASCAR Day (Pushing my car for time), Sumo, Tire Tug O' War, a timed Farmer's Walk carrying plates, Piggy Back Relays, and an obstacle. To keep it fun we had Fabulous Prizes, stuff like donuts or candy bars. I think that the kids enjoyed it and it helped. Use your imagination and keep it fresh.

One thing I like to do is get a bunch of guys together on off days to play basketball at the park.
Not only does it fulfill the competition aspect, but ball is a great sister game to football as far as footwork, teamwork, overall athleticism, jumping ability, hands, hand-eye-coordination and more. They can take turns being captains and each get a chance to be the designated leader, although anyone can be a leader on any given day.
They also always come out of it by the end of the off season with close friends that they did not have before.
Coach ^^^ you should be feeding den big boys broccoli!!!

One thing we are trying this season is dividing our team (including coaches) into three houses that compete for trophies. We have four traveling trophies Mr. Clean (cleanest locker room), Iron Man (attendence), Kings of 'Paign (Daily or Weekly Competition) and Civil War (Frosh/Soph Scrimmage). If any house posses all four trophies at once the head coach will buy them donuts.
We are also adding a period at the end of every practice called the finale. Our KO team has to recover an onside kick, score in two minute offense and hit a PAT. If they fail in any stage they have to run gassers for the remaining time in the period. If the defense holds them they do not have to run gassers. It is the only time we truly go best vs. best and since it is with something on the line it gets competitive.
