Keeping with this weeks financial theme, I was curious what type of budget your team has and what you like to spend money on. When I see that some teams seemingly spend less than 10k a year it blows my mind even in the smallest schools, If you could list
1.) the number of kids in your program 2.)how much you blow through each year 3.) your top couple expenses 4.) what is the least you could run your program on? 5.) I get that you can always spend more cash, but if you had everything you wanted and have some need for, what would that number be?
we have 180 kids 9-12, 1700 in the school. last year we spent 158k. our greatest expense is coaching stipends followed by helmets (the head coach got a bug up his butt one day, and threw most of our helmets out). I think that we could run on 90k if we had to. Other than major facility upgrades like a jumbotron, which two teams in our league have, so now we need one according to our parents and kids, we don't need anymore cash than that.

I'll give ya a look into my first year as the AD for a private christian school. Keep in mind everyone thinks we make money and that's the farthest thing from the truth.

1. We play 6 man football so we should have about 18 kids this year, this is actually a large group for us. 2. Gas just for football this year runs right at $1400. Total all sports $6500,Football,BBall, Soccer, Volleyball and Golf. 3. Top expense is helmet reconditioning for $41 a helmet. We sent off 20 this year. right at 1k total with shipping. 4. We raised 5k in the off season to buy new uniforms this year on our own so that's independent of the budget.
TBH 10k would be a dream for me atm lol. I could use it to buy them some shirts and shorts to work out in etc. As it was the coaches got together on our own and bought the kids their workout shirts out of our own pockets.
I wish we had a budget like any public school but our schools been here about 7 years, we've got our own permanent campus this year and things are just tight. If we want the money for things we raise it through variuos fundraisers.
158k budget just blows my mind. I don't care how big a school that is, that's crazy. That must be a lot of swag going out to the kids.
Right now all the coaches stipends are paid as part of our salaries, but I'd need about $27k to pay for all the stipends for the coaches and to make our sports break even this year.

I wrote most of this on the other thread. We are a school in Fla, 300 kids. We run somewhere between 30-45k through the football account and 30k through the QB club. The football account buys new helmets, pads, sleds, paint, shirts, uniforms just whatever is everyday stuff. The QB club buys charter buses, championship shirts, hats, protein, camps, pre and post game meals, feeds the coaches on Sundays for meetings, 7 on 7 tourneys, team cleats, just anything extra. We just bought a new mower and they got the school to pay half out of matinence and the QB club and football split the other 3k.

So you work at a place where your kids can realistically expect a Jumbotron, where coaches' stipends account for the biggest part of a $158k budget, and where the HC can just replace all your helmets with new stuff on a whim. Where is this football paradise and how do I get a job there?
Heck, we finished $20k in the hole last year and didn't do anything fancy to get there. Our 4 stipends accounted for a grand total of $10k-$14k. We bought a half dozen new helmets and sets of pads, reconditioned our old helmets, and ordered new road jerseys. Gas for the team bus cost over 1,000 because of the distances we have to travel, as well as field maintenance, repairs to the 15 year old sprinkler system, etc.
The kids were lucky that we could get pregame and post game meals, as well as our team t-shirts, donated to them. If it wasn't donated, we didn't give out swag, food , or buy any new weightroom or practice equipment.

I do think that it is excessive, but the jumbotron is a money maker. The hardest part of getting it in is jumping through the signage ordinances hoops in our city as they are illegal, but we are trying to get a waiver. The thing costs about 350k to get installed. I plan on getting 10 businesses to pledge 10k a year for 10 years to advertise on it. We had 6 jump on right away.

Our two biggest line items are travel (airplanes and hotels) and the two full-time paid staff. Other than that, we don't spend anything even close to $150k. Our operating budget is a fraction of that. That's an insane high school budget, where does that money come from?

Between all the events, sponsorship, and what our kids do, it adds up quickly. The school in the wealthiest area of town make our budget look like a pittance. When they decided they wanted a jumbotron, they bought it, straight cash. Their booster club pulled in almost a half million last year.

College program, biggest athletic conference in North America. Nice. For some reason I thought you coached youth ball. I was wondering what this jet setting youth club would be like...
