How many of you have had to fight a battle to get the fans to your games? We were very up and down this year. We had 2000+ for a random home game, but then only had 250 for a home playoff game. What are some of the things that can be done to get both students and the community to come out? We are going to do some tailgaiting with free hot dogs and stuff for sure, but are looking for other things to do as well.

I wish we had 250 at a home game.
When I playing a couple of years ago we reached the British college conference final with the winner going to the National final. We postered up the whole college and get people excited about it. Even had an article int he local paper. We managed to get 150 people turn up.
We won and made it to the National finals were around 400 people turned up.
Man I wish I could get 2000 people to a game.

Word of caution - make sure there's some kind of supervision policy for the jr high kids. For years we let the younger players in for free if they wore their game shirt. As coaches we thought it was great, but because many parents just dropped off the kids, there was a few problems. At times there was more injuries from the roughhousing on the sidelines than in the game. The AD changed the policy last year to not allow them in for free. We're going to come up with a 'youth supervision plan' to present to the AD. Not try to highjack the thread, but if anyone has a supervision policy for jr high kids, it'd be good to hear it. What a great idea jhanawa - I'm definitely doing that this year. Give free tickets to all of the local middle school kids and youth football programs, get the younger kids involved and work on building an EMPIRE

Good point Mav. Sad but true. The idea is to get the parents to accompany the kids and do something family/community oriented, but your right, lots of parents look for anything to drop off the kids, its a shame that the local HS game isn't THE place to be on Friday nights.

Win. Winning fills seats. Not all places... which is unfortunate. Tailgating is a good idea... getting other clubs involved (we have an FFA BBQ at one, FCCLA deserts at another...Boy Scouts have a night... we have stuff going on all the time and have great attendance here (which is relative, we are a town of under 1000). You could also follow the Pokey Allen plan and have fans write up plays and pay to get them in a drawing... then run their play sometime during the game (signaled with towel waving)... give a prize based on the yardage gained... I guess one guys play went for a 80 yd. TD at Portland State...

do y'all sell SEASON passes?
I know we used to pre-sell SEASON passes to ANY conference game for like $50 (with guest) or something. You could attend any conference game with this pass (not many do) but the attraction sells because you would save money (and not wait in line at the ticket booth).
Get the parents to come out and have something for the little kids to do (free babysitting) and folks will come out.
Set up a separate concession stand with grilling brats, dogs, & burgers (people will come just for food) and sell (and raffle) team apparel.
Generally, if the folks in the stands can't be excited about the product on the field, they won't come, though. If ALL the kids play, you'll get most of the parents out. If you win and there is excitement (close games) you'll get people out.
Try drumming up support from the local sports writers HOW? Invite them to practices / to the locker room after the game AND FEED THEM..........they'll think you are Bill Belichick after that.
Most of the people attending our games actually came to watch the MARCHING BAND perform at halftime (then leave!).
