So I'm having a little bit of an issue, and was wondering if I could solicit some advice. I coach in California, where we are required to have a 3 week dead period. During the dead period only weight lifting is allowed, NO running.
Well I show up today, and our head coach tells our players to go with Coach X (who is not a coach with our program). Coach X takes them down to the field where they warm up, and agility drills are set up. I ask the HC if this is a violation of the rules? He tells me no, because the coach is not officially on our staff but with a training service. He then tells me to wait in the weight room, not to go on the field (he had to leave for a meeting).
The kids ran, and did agility work for about 45 minutes before coming into the wt. room.
So I guess I have two questions-
1) those of you familiar with CA dead period rules, is this okay? Did we just exploit a loophole in the system or are we violating a rule? 2) If we are violating a rule, how would you handle the situation (ie in my shoes)?
Thank you.

As long as its NOT mandatory, I dont see how its a violation.

I also coach in California and our dead period mandates that we don't do anything football specific, but we can do agility work as well as weight training. Are you sure that you interpreted it the dead period correctly? It could be that the different sections have different rules for that, I don't know.
For example, we haven't run any plays this week or last week but we have done agility work out on the field that has strong carryover to the football field.

Per the CIFSS website-
During the dead period, weight lifting ONLY would be permitted. No running or other type of conditioning would be allowed

There are many programs in the Southern Section that will have a service do the speed and agility training with the players and the coaches run the weight room before or after.

Not in violation.... You can even have your coach do the conditioning.... Just can't have a football out there with them

In the Southern Section it is a violation to do running, agilities, etc. It is clear in the blue book that only weight training is allowed.
