Not sure if this should go on this page or not, but it's not really "technology" so thought it would be seen more here......
Anybody got a good line on a reasonably priced practice segment timer? These things are as hard to find as hens teeth, especially on any websites that have a price on them. Rogers has one in their catalog but it's $1,600. For that price it needs to be able to make my practice plans and bring me coffee in the mornin'. Anybody with an alternative?

Recruit yourself a student assistant that has a bull horn and a stop watch and have them sound the horn and announce the period number every five minutes.

Have tried that at two different schools. They get distracted and wander off, etc. The auto timers are more reliable.

No argument on my part. $1600 is too much for us. If it isn't for you, knock yourself out. I can tell you about my favorite segment timer, though. That was my son. As the lowest-seniority manager for a D.1 school his job was to sit up in the tower, keep time, and blow the horn. There's a world of difference between HS and college managers, I understand. We haven't had much luck getting managers to keep time. I also wouldn't pay that kind of cash for a timer. We just wear watches and, if a segment is going over, yell over to the HC.

Problem is, the HC (me) is gonna be coaching a position....and I sort of lose track of time, even when I'm on a timer! Anyway, found one for $950, plus a battery pack for $150 (we don't have electricity at the practice field). So we're headed in the right direction!

What time did you find and where?

We have had great success with
1) A manager being in charge of watch w/an air horn & yelling the period we're in 2) A coach being in charge of the time- I was always good at keeping time and running drills, so I usually am the 1 in charge.
I think a timer like that is a waste of money- someone out there can multitask, can't they?

In college we had a manager use a "cooking" type timer, it would buzz and he'd blow the horn, flip the "period" card and reset the timer. Not a tough thing to do, though it always did seem the conditioning periods were longer than the others...

I have a wristwatch with a timer---10 dollars. All you need is one coach to know when a certain segment of time has expired, and then he can blow the whistle.

The segment timer is the only consistent reliable choice if you want complete accuracy. Managers with bullhorns, coaches with whistles, or any other person are going to become distracted and not be accurate all the time. Good segment timers, like Spectrum's, if taken care of are reliable for years. You can easily get six to ten years of use from one, which would bring the cost down to less that $300 per season. Personally, I think it's worth the investment.

edgy..gotta disagree with you here. Wristwatch goes off...Coach blows whistle... "Period 2" is yelled, and the $$$ is spent on something much more useful

if you want to get fancy....
get a boxing round timer that buzz pretty loud - you can set it for whatever you want.
Then when it goes off the manager in ear shot of it (who is usually hanging out with the trainers and injured players) blow the air horn.
OR
Map out the entire lesson plan for everyone with the exact minutes and make sure the rest of your staff wears some watches (or at least can comprehend how many reps they are going to go through in a session), then blow the big horn at the start and end of major sessions (20 min Group / Team)

check out the Victory Practice Timers...they are super reliable and very easy to use with wireless touch screen controller. The Dallas Cowboys, Denver Broncos and several D1 colleges use them (I think Alabama and Auburn for sure). check it out at www.sidelineinteractive.com/practice-timer/

We practice on our home field and program the stadium clock/horn for the appropriate periods and have the horn go off. Not helpful unless you have a programmable scoreboard at your home field.

This thread is eight years old. Nowadays don't most smart phones have timer apps?

Some people still don't have smart phones, including me. I don't either but most of our staff does. Probably at least one guy does on most staffs.

Ultratimer app. You can set your practice segments any way you want to.
