Football coaches are notorious for being superstitious. Does your staff have any?
The school where I am now doesn't but I used to be on a very superstitious staff (One guy was a baseball coach. Baseball guys are unbelievable.). When we were on a winning streak we had to do everything exactly the same before games. We ate exactly the same pregame meal. It was Chic Fil A. I used to love Chic Fil A. Now I get sick to the stomach when I drive by one. In the office before games the boss would put on the Remember the Titans soundtrack and, in the outer office, Baseball Guy played The Temptations Greatest Hits. I used to love the Temps but now I damn near break my finger changing the station when they come on my car radio.

Had a coach who made us sprint 20 40's the Monday after our first game because we gave up twenty points. We won the next game and he made us sprint the same number every Monday until we lost. We went on a seven game winning streak. It was miserable lol.

No. Superstitions create doubt. Doubt makes you weak.

For me no. For some guys on our staff yes. Same guys had to drive bus... Which I liked because it wasn't me. One coach wore same outfits when it got cold. Same 6 layers and refused to wear any new coaching gear on game day... For 4 years. Same order of doing everything on game day. It was crazy.

No. Superstitions create doubt. Doubt makes you weak. I couldn't find the eye rolling smiley. I'm superstitious as crap, but pretty much just for myself. Some of my "superstitions" for the team are just to kind of be annoying. Example- on Mondays we Indian run for 6:36. Not 6:30, not 6:45. 6:36. Why? I don't know. It's long enough to kind of get a decent run in to loosen up and not long enough that it's a death march. Plus, it's just sort of become one of our quirky "things". Personally, I wear exactly the same outfit every game. Exactly the same. Same khaki shorts, same shirt under my polo, same pair of socks, same pair of shorts under my khaki shorts. Have it laying in a pile in my room waiting for next season. Always do the same workout on Fridays. Have had years where I've eaten the same lunch. For me, it's not really superstition as I know those things don't bring me success, but rather I try to get myself into the same feeling or mindset before each game. I figure if I do the same things, that physically I'll be ready to go.

^^^^^^...larrymoe described how I am toward the idea. I always say I don't know if superstition works but why chance it... Wear the same clothes, eat the same breakfast/lunch. As for the team I just try and keep things routine but I learned quickly that when dealing with teenagers it is very hard to make a weekly "superstitious routine" that doesn't get altered in some way. The superstition is more toward me and my mind set.
one thing i have done for the past two years is not trim my beard on winning streaks....stupid I know but has been kind of a fun thing with the kids. two years ago lost the first three then went on 9 game win streak so It was pretty "lumberjack". Last season was 7 games out of the gate then lost game 8 then won out 5 more games....

I am pretty bad superstitious and alot of it comes from being a habit oriented person. I do things the same way in my personal life, get ready, brush teeth, workout etc... As far as superstitions go, when we are winning, I wear the same outfit, under wear and every thing each Friday till we lose. I do wash it. I will add a layer if it gets cold but I wont take one off. Also if we lose, I try to find a whole new outfit to wear till we find a win.

When I played, I found coach superstitions to be kind of offending. I was often left with the impression that after putting in the time in the weight room and busting my ass on the practice field, my coach still believed that whether or not he wore his special socks would be important for the outcome of the game. Never understood that.
As a consequence, I have no superstitions. What I wear/do/eat/sing on game day (or the day before) won't affect how well we prepared during the week.

I think its human nature to be superstitious. It puts the mind at ease. I usually wear the same stuff (if winning) but as soon as a loss occurs I get pissed and throw any superstitions out the window.

I once spoke with a Sport Psychologist about this and he said that these "superstitions" are coaches way to mentally prepare for the game. After hearing that i didn't feel so stupid about my need to listen Led Zeppelin's Achilles last stand before taking the field.

That's pretty much me. I'm not so much superstitious as I have things I do to get ready for a game.
I don't like to talk to anyone when I show up at the school Friday night. I wear head phones listen to a mix of music.
About a hour before pre game I walk the field and touch each corner of the end zone after I touch the last corner I take my headphones off. Take the rosary out my dad had when he passed say a quick prayer put it on and I'm good to go.
Basically did the same thing as a player minus the rosary. Gets my mind right and for some reason i haven't had a injured linemen in 4 years so i go with it.
Only other thing is I wear dress shoes for playoff games.

I'm not superstitious. It's not characteristic of us Capricorns.
Actually I do have one - it's bad luck to be behind at the end of the game.

I don't shave after Sunday each week. Probably because I'm lazy. Come to think of it I do that all year.

I would say I don't have a superstition but a routine. Kind of like a sprinter getting into the blocks. It just mentally prepares the coach (or sprinter) for competition.

I only shave after a loss... Last season I shave before the District Championship and we lost... started not shaving until the next loss and we won state. The beard came in handy during the state game it was -15 at kickoff.

We have a paw we touch when we walk out for home games. Its on a 4x4 piece of metal. We haven't lost at home since we took over as a staff(21 games). One of the kids brought up after we lost a game this year that we don't lose when we touch the paw. The paw came off the wall and traveled everywhere we went. 11 games later we were state champs. I don't necessarily believe in it but if the kids do and it works, we go with it.

I have to workout before our games. Not for good luck, it just gets rid of the jitters and keeps me from getting a bug up my butt to deviate from the gameplan.

I too workout if I have time. We have great weight lifting facilities at our school plus a YMCA is right across the street. I actually work out at the Y more often just to get out of the building for a bit. I also have to eat a Subway meal before the game. If I only have time for one...the meal trumps the workout!

I prefer to call them "routines." We all like routine. Players are perceptive. They see when we do things differently.

I refer to them as rituals, but I have to clean my house before a game. Win or loose, I don't want to come home to a messy house after a long week.

Before the booth guys head up all the coaches have to shake hands, and again at halftime.

Chicken for a pregame meal. Always. Yellow Gatorade. A few years ago I wore a hoddie for our first cold game, and we won, snapping a 3 game losing streak. Did'nt take it off until we lost in the state SMI finals, 7 weeks later.

I was awful as a player. Don't touch this, eat this, wear that, etc. Now, I'm not into it at all. I never took offense to my coach doing the superstition thing though. Always just saw it as a fun thing he believed and we did. Part of our team DNA that year, ya know?

Our staff doesn't have any, but we had a QB who had to throw up before we went to the field after the team prayer. Regular as clock work.

No superstitions ... try to keep the routine the same but do not get bent out of shape if it gets tweaked. Just like the game we coach, gotta be able to adjust on the run. Also, have found that sometimes when the routine is different than the norm it creates extra juice.

Im not too superstitious. But I am a little stitious.
Some clothing will be similar. Little rituals. The more we win, the more superstitious I get.
As a player I always made an egg sandwich in the morning on gameday. As a coach I ate at our local taco shop. Breakfast burrito on game day. It was great.
Moved to West Virginia. No taco shops. A buddy and I went to tudors (WV biscuit chain) for breakfast on gamedays. Not as good.

Tomato juice, started when I was a player and I would get terrible nerves and couldn't eat. My grandmother forced me to drink a big glass of the stuff (I hated it) said it would fill me up. I don't know if it worked but we beat the #1 team in the league by 21. I'm actually starting to like the stuff 11 years later.
