Ours shag balls, hold bags, and rush our QB. We are an up-tempo team so we want the guys to get lined up as fast as possible. The managers will chase down the incomplete balls so we can practice faster. We also have a couple of guys rush our QB during 7 on 7 drills. That way he always throws with people around him. They can't touch him but they can get as close to him as possible. Our managers really like the days they get to do that.

I was just about to start a thread on this very topic. Our watergirls/trainers/managers whatever you want to call them were pretty lack luster last year. Does anybody have a schedule or some kind of a rules/expectations they have for their managers? I'm probably taking on this task this next year, just because nobody else will and I'm tired of the headache. Could use some help.

I like the ideas about shagging balls and such but right now all we have are girls and Im afraid they would get in the way more than anything. We are also going to have one set up and run our segment timer/clock

I would never have a female as a manager in high school, you are just asking for trouble.

that's the majority of all they are around here...every now and then you'll get a guy, but they'll get ridiculed so much for not playing that they won't do it...

If a boy is there every day and doing managerial duties, he might as well be in a jersey and pads unless there's a good reason he can't.

I don't do managers...one more person to worry about organizing what they will do who usually has no clue what happens on a football field. We use the walking wounded in managerial roles. Tends to increase the "recovery time."

I hand the managers our practice schedule and teach them what materials will be needed at each station for individuals. I also have one film or team sessions. I will also place a manager with a watch if they are responsible and have them notify me when a period change is needed. We have our managers wash towels, put away our jerseys and pants when they are returned from the cleaners. I also have one of them input our stats on-line on Mondays.

I wish we had 12 managers. Hell 2 competent managers a year would be great. (This coming from the guy who controls all things equipment in our program).
For the first time, in forever, we had one competent kid who is awesome. His duties are primarily on Friday nights. But during the week he will spot the ball, fill up water bottle, and just a general extra hand if we need someone to go fetch something.

When I was a HC, I had 4-5 watergirls. In my experience, there aren't many high school (or even middle school) boys who are going to want to be managers. And with the elementary kids, they're usually not very dependable. So we used high school girls. They took it very seriously. Some even gave up cheerleading to be watergirls. We were smart about it and made sure everything the girls needed to do was well away from the locker room.
Never had any problems.

One suggestion that I'd add here is to rotate the managers if you keep anywhere near the same numbers. It would take the time burden off of them and make the job more attractive. You could have different crews for different gays or a pre-practice and a post-practice crew, etc.

thats what i've got to try and get worked out. last year we had like 8 girls interested in being managers. but 4 of them were in athletics because they played basketball or ran track. and our AD decided that they needed to be in offseason during the athletic hour instead of at football. so it was hard to get them to come back out after school since they were no longer getting class credit for it. then we had like 2 or 3 girls that would just leave half way through practice. this is why i'm looking for some help structuring their day, that way it's clear cut at the beginning of the year this is what needs to be accomplished on this day and we'll go from there.

That way they only had to spend one day a week out there helping.

Both...you pompous idiot. Just stated a fact that managers are NOT a necessary part of a football program. Have the captains organize and implement a rotation of responsibilities for practice field cleanup, as well as water & equipment on game days. Middle school coaches handle organizing water boys for games.

Wait a minute. We've had female managers for years but the guys who think there are problems involved aren't wrong. You have to be very careful to make sure that you never put them in a position where they're alone with the players. You can't just treat them like one of the guys. I think it's worth the effort but i wouldn't chalk it up to chauvinism if guys were wary of having girls around.

i'm not disagreeing.
The question was not, "Should you have girl managers?" or "What are the risks with girl managers?" or "What is some advice for handling female managers?"
All great questions and perfectly suitable for their very own topic. But, not what was asked. I think that happens a lot on here. You get a lot great responses and great answers but they have nothing to do with the questions being asked.
The question was what do some of you have your managers do during practice? Which I piggy backed with, "Does anybody have a practice plan or schedule that they follow?"
Now if somebody would have responded with "Have the Girls do the laundry in the nude" or "Bring water in wet t-shirts" or "Spend time alone with all water girls individually" or "Encourage all managers to personally service all football players," etc. Then all the concerns and advice on how to handle interaction with the managers would be warranted.

we have plenty of water girls.....we needed people to film practice more than anything and that is what I have them doing. They are also charting catches and drops for the WR's.

I had two that would wrap ankles, and would handle minor injuries at the games/practices. One wants to be a Athletic Trainer and her mother is a nurse, so she has some background with dealing with minor issues and wrapping.
We used them to handle stats from dropped passes, to getting the correct people with gang tackles. We had a ton of those every game, and it would complicate things if we didn't have a few set of eyes. I was the only full time coach on the staff that I could truly depend on. So it helped having people that wanted to be there to help out.

I am at a very large HS in Alabama and we are fortunate enough to have lots of student helpers. Our head athletic trainer also teaches health at the school as well as some Athletic Training classes. He has a JV and Varsity squad of athletic trainers. Each is made up of about 8 girls. He has them at some point during the day to prep for practice as well as help them work towards the athletic training profession. These girls go through an interview process just to be selected. I was very impressed at the organization it takes to make this happen, but it saves us coaches a ton of time to have these girls at every practice. They are very professional and know that they could be easily replaced if they mess around and do not take their job seriously. On that same subject our players know to handle these ladies with respect or they can be easily replaced. Seeing how well our trainer handles our student trainers I did my best to model him the past 2 years with a "Video Ops" department. I have bumped my numbers from the first year being 4 students to last year we had 6 to this coming season I have 8 guys that went through spring training with us as filmers. They handle all of our practice and game video. From filming every drill to uploading and intercutting on Hudl so that when we walk in off the practice field it is ready to go. We as coaches do not touch a thing for practice it is all handled. I did a guest blog post for Hudl several years ago on building a video department at your school that you can read about here: Part 1 of 4
This spring when I had my interest meeting about next year I handed out a packet that included a calendar of days they would all work as well as some basic info about our "Video Ops" department. That info can be found Here

We have a coach who coordinates the managers. They contribute quite a bit to our program. Responsibilities include water-boys being charged and full (we are a tempo team and kids get drinks during drills…eliminates water breaks) end zone and sideline film of practice, setting up drills, gathering cones, keeping track of balls. The coach in charge tells them what needs to be done each day. They are responsible for loading busses too. We've had a couple of girls continue to work for football programs at colleges too. This year we had a boy who had a tumor removed from his brain when he was a ninth grader, he was a manager for a year, then he became a freshman assistant coach. He'll be a student assistant at a D-1 school next fall. The young people who volunteer in our program contribute greatly to our success.

We have 3 managers. During practice they take care of the water and getting bags of ice for injuries, tape, and wraps. Also sometimes during practice they will go in and cleanup some of the lockeroom stuff. However they only go in the lockeroom when there is more than 1 of them able to go in. That way if a coach or player has to go in the lockeroom during practice, which is rare since we can send a manager in to get stuff, its not a 1 male 1 female situation. Managers will also do some laundry items during practice like towels and game uniforms if they havent been finished over the weekend. On wednesday afternoon during practice they put game pants in every players locker. One thing that helps is most of our managers are girls that are planning or interested in athletic training in college.

This has been my experience so far this spring. I have 8 girls that show up everyday. We have 4 chart catches and drop for the WR's daily. They also enter the results into excel for the WR coach. I have 4 in charge of filming practice. 2 set up the EZ camera and record group and team segments. the other 2 use a tripod to film any drill work that needs to be recorded. I just got them trained on uploading the film into hudl. The next step for me is to have them take the laptop out to practice and upload most of the video before practice is over. It would be awesome to walk in from practice and be able to view the video.
