OL type guys- I have a question for you.
We have some money to put into a new sled. Currently we have a 5 man Mod sled that has seen better days. The skids are off, the pads are beat up, etc. Not terrible shape, but getting up there. Since we have some money I've pretty much decided to take the old one and fence post it stationary for our DL and LBs to use for sled drills and buy a new one.
My question is this- We really like our Mod sled. Is it beneficial for us to go to a Lev sled? I've never used a Lev or coached anywhere that has had one. The $1000 difference isn't really that big of a deal, so is it worth it to upgrade?

I like the ability to press the Lev sled upwards. I find it teaches defensive player how to get leverage (get under the blocker and press him off / lock him out).
You can "lock" the Lev Sled to prevent the upward swing - then you basically have a Mod Sled.
In my opinion it is worth the extra money. We currently have a 2-man Lev Sled and it gets a lot of use from our DL and LBs.

Never coached with a Lev sled but it always looked useful. If you're in a position where $1000 isn't "a lot of money," you may as well go for it.
You may be able to offset the difference by selling your old sled if you don't really want to fencepost it. It sounds like it might still be in better shape than ours.

I don't like it. But that is me. My favorite sled was a gilman sled with the low boy pads. We were always flat back. The school that had a lev sled the mechanism eventually broke down so some would rock up and some would not. Put your old sled up against a brick wall and you can still lev it.

Defensively I love the lev sled. It will not pop up until you have pushed the bag in first. It requires kids to strike with power then leverage the bag. And anytime you do not want the bags to raise up, you simply turn the pin behind each bag.
It offers a lot of versatility.
