as I read this new blogpost of dr. stankovich (http://blog.drstankovich.com/addressing-myths-about-sport-psychology-mental-toughness-training/) , I was reminded of an idea I had in mind about preparing a one on one personal meeting with each player before the offseason starts to talk about what their goals are and how they see themselves within the team. I hope I can get them to have a clearer picture of what they have to do experience personal success and to contribute to the teams success and for me to get a better idea of how I can help them reach their goals.
dr. stankovich writes: "2. Motivation. Developing a mindset that prompts an athlete to be “the first to practice and the last to leave” is largely dependent on becoming clear with personal values and future goals — from there motivation (intrinsic and extrinsic) often improves dramatically."
My question to you guys is, what are some of the themes you initiate when doing something like this with your players? do you have specific questions you ask everyone? what do you do in preparing for these one on one meetings? and do you keep notes of what the conversation revealed about the player to evaluate (I think about writing down something with the player to make him more responsible for what he said during the conversation)?
thanks in advance.

We have them fill out a plan sheet with SMART goals. One goal for their personal life, usually academics related but doesn't have to be. The other is a weight room goal. We meet with them every 90 days and talk over the goals. We check in with them informally whenever we can about how they are doing meeting their goals. While we meet with them we try and ask a question about their family or something else to see how life is going. These meetings are usually pretty short.
In season we will continue this but weekly with seven-day plans.

I took something from a mentor of mine which I think is very simple and effective. Basically you sit down with a kid and let them know that this is just between him and you. I ask three questions: 1. How did the season go for you? 2. What do you see for yourself next year? 3. What do you see for your team? 4. Is there anything else that we can do as a program to give you a better experience.
For each of those you ask follow up questions that lead into "goals" that the player sets. So if he says, "I'd like to be a starting wide receiver," you follow up with, "What do you think you need to do to become the starting wide receiver?"
For the final question, we're looking for some ideas of how to run the team. Over the years we've had kids make suggestions about team meals, season mottos, senior night, etc. One thing I picked up on that we needed to do a better job with is in-season lifting. I had multiple kids bring that up with me as we went through our meetings.

We meet in the offseason. I will fill out an evaluation of everything from physical strength/speed/mental toughness/etc. Then they will fill out the same evaluation.
We compare and talk about how I see them and how they see themselves.
Then they set goals. It can be spiritual, academic, or related to sports. I make sure they are concrete and obtainable. If a kid says he wants to be bench 350 lbs by fall and he is only benching 150 lbs now. That isnt obtainable so we will adjust that.
They then have to sign that forum.
Lastly I have them fill out about 10 questions. Worst moment in your life/best moment in your life/favorite music group/most admired person/etc. Just questions that help you learn more about the kid. It also helps create more of a one on one connection with the kids.
