I would like to see what everyone who uses an off season point system is doing. I am a head coach at a small school in IL. Most of our football players either play baseball or run track in the spring. We are on block schedule so the kids get 45 min two or three times a week to lift weights in PE class. In addition to that the weight room at school is open 3 days a week after school (but most are in practice) and there is a gym in town that is open 24hr a day every day. I would just like to see some ideas of what everyone is using for a point system. Thanks, Jon C

We split our guys into 2 teams named after our 2 school colors, appointed a senior captain a junior assistant captain and an attendence enforcer.
We awarded points as follows:
10 point per attendence for a team lift 20 points for an additional day lifting - 25 for unexcused absense - 25 for not having your workout book - 25 for incomplete workout book (we spot check often) 2 points per % for your 1st term average 10 points for attending a non-football school function (coach must see you) ie basketball game 1 point per lbs for bench squat dead max in our March testing (obviously stronger guys will score more here)
We also did an endurence puch up and pull up test where we awarded 2 points per rep
We will test again in May and will award points as follows: 25 points per % for percentage gains on your bench squat dead max (a big emphesis to reward gainers) 2 points per rep for push up and pull up endurance test reps 5 point bonus for every rep increased over your March testing score
We also award points arbitrary points, examples: - had a free throw shooting contest after a work out for fun and awarded 2 points per made free throw - have unannounced strength or mental toughness competetions after lifts and award random points (ie 500 to winning team) couple things we have done included last man standing plank off, bicep curl off, as many tight grip bench press reps as you can in 60 seconds at a set weight etc etc... anything that makes guys battle and compete and push themselves against others.
Random Call outs I make during workouts, I'll call a kid out in the middle of a workout and say things like "if you can draw up power vs a 4-3 under I'll give you 100 points" or "first guy to do 25 burpies gets 25 points"
We had a large number of players from our team playing HS hockey and B-Ball durin the winter so we probably had 15 kids unavailable to lift after school in our program. We started the challenge program off exclusive to O and D linemen and I split the teams up evenly at the start of our lifting program. A bunch of skill guys asked about joining the teams. We made them "earn in" by showing up for our team workouts and lifting our program but not being on a team for a trail period, and then when we felt they were dedicated enough we would have a draft for the skill guys. They knew once they got on a team they would be hurting the team for no-shows etc. It really helped our linemen build a culture together of being the elite unit on our team. We got the freshmen linemen to feel apart of the program and start to build the pride in being a linemen at our school that we have been trying to build for the last few years.
The winning team will get a pizza party before our spring ball which we hold in June before schools out. I'll likely invite anyone who had regular attendence in the program though as a reward.
It may seem dumb but honestly our kids are going crazy for these points, there's a lot of positive peer pressuer given out for points. A couple weeks ago a guy forgot his book in the room after work outs and someone called him on his cell pohone to come back and get it so his team wouldn't lose points.
I've only had to deduct points once for unexcused absences and once for incomplete book. It's been great for our off season program in other ways as well ie building confidence and team bonding.
I post the current score every week and I try and keep it close to keep it competetive.
I have a sinking suspicion that the score will be so close that the contest will come down to the last day of testing in June.....

We used to do point system until kids were running around saying "points= playing time"
and we had seniors beating up sophs "you earn more points than me and Ill kill you"
we now just reward attendance (% based rewards 3x a year)
we additionally reward performance ( 1000 lb club)
and we reward improvement (we set goals, if they meet it, we recognize it)
