Here in Canada, it's the hockey coaches who hoard kids. They @#$# a brick when they find out a kid is playing football, and put on the full court press to have the kid bail on football to "focus" on hockey. Of course, the funnel in hockey is just as tight as it is in any other sport, perhaps tighter - if you aren't on someone's radar by about age 15 in hockey, chances are you aren't going anywhere. Before you know it, these kids are 17, been cut from three different junior hockey tryout camps, and they realize that they missed out on a lot of fun by not playing football, basketball, etc. along with hockey.

In the last 10 years I haven't met a HS basketball coach, or a HS baseball coach I could trust. Used to be the HS football coaches were also the basketball or wrestling coaches in the winter, and/or then became the track or baseball coaches in the spring. And when the HS HFC got older he became the golf coach! Aahh, the good ol' days! Well i'm the baseball coach so thats a wash. However, our basketball coach is very supportive. A lot of his kids don't play because we are that freaking good at basketball but at least he tries

Our basketball coach is all about playing both sports. He wants every boy that can to play football-basketball-baseball. Then again, he's the AD so that helps him with #'s.

Specialization is indeed a problem, but it's not entirely new. Let's be honest, though--there are football coaches who are as guilty as basketball or baseball coaches in encouraging kids to "specialize" or in dominating their time so much they can't play other sports. As for the other reasons kids find not to play--nothing unusual in any of that. I've seen them find reasons for over 40 years--job, another sport, fear of injury, bought a car, and the ultimate undefeated obstacle (a girl)

We started practice on Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 4:00. They could get all the tutoring they wanted on those days. It took care of the problem (and helped us all the way around academically).

Haven't see it here, but Alabama is a football crazy state. We've got record numbers signed up. Over 70% of our high school boys play football. It's a good problem to have.

We do not get out until 3:10 .. so if they choose tutoring (getting there, getting tutoring and then getting back) They have already missed a good portion. 2:18 sounds nice, I am going to apply to teach there.

Well, the drawback is you start at 7:18. However, it did lend itself to some pluses like tutoring, etc in the afternoon before practice.
