None of our coaches work at the school, so we just have the kids bring in their (every 9 weeks) report cards to the office and we look over them. How do you think is the best way to go about monitoring academics?
We also use different captains each game, based on different things. Was thinking about making straight A kids automatic captains or something like that. Just trying to get some ideas

Post a list outside the weight room of all the kids who made straight A's, honor roll, etc. See if you can find 3-4 teachers who would we willing to do a weekly grade check of your kids. Getting them at the end of the 9 weeks is too late to catch problems.

A lot of school systems have an online grade check system. If your school system does ask for an account to access all of your students. Takes me about 2 hours to check 90-95 players grades. I check everyone's grades every 2-3 weeks and the select few that I know are risks every week.

Our school has an academic eligibility process in place where students have to be passing to play or be put on academic probation if not. I thought most schools would have something like this.

If you can't check online and you want to look a grades more often make them a sheet and have teachers write the grade and sign off on it. You can also give them a spot for comments about behavior and such.
Can be done as often as you want. I have seen it done weekly, biweekly, half way through a term, etc. whatever you need.

Potential is just a cute way of saying you haven't done anything.

Most schools have Grades that are computerized your AD should put together a weekly, monthly, bimonthly or quarterly grade report for your athletes. If not ask somebody in the office at the school, they can put this report together for you in just a few minutes. Usually they are more than happy to help when you tell them you are trying to hold the kids responsible for their academics.

During the season we get their schedule and put it in a binder. Every Monday players get a grade sheet and turn it in Wednesday. No grade sheet and no play Friday. Comments that or poor in behavior or work completion they sit. I have done this as a head coach for ten years at two different schools. Works well. Players know it is coming each week and we can catch problems early before they spiral out of control.
in the spring all of the players who workout with us get weekly grade sheets and turn them in as well. Poor behavior or poor work completion equals hills outside the weight room or suspension. Keeps tabs and keeps them accountable. Not everyone will get A or Bs but effort is a must. Will not compromise poor effort or poor behavior in the classroom. By doing it in the spring it sets the norm for the season and again allows us to catch a messy kid in the classroom before it gets too bad.

We are notified if a student is failing and he isn't allowed to play, but for me that's not enough. I want to know if a kid has a C and why, etc. I want to know if there's a subject my guy is struggling at so we can help him out with it.

We used to have the kids take around a weekly grade sheet. At first the teachers didn't care for it, but then they loved it. We had a section on there for behavior and we punish kids for not turning work in and poor behavior. The kids had to turn them into a specific coach by Thursday each week. We punish on Friday during the athletic period while all of the other kids are competing. If a kid is failing he has to get 30 minutes of before school tutoring in that class and get it signed by the teacher on his next grade sheet. If he has between a 70-75 he has to get 15 minutes of tutoring. It helped us keep track of grades and keep the kids in line with the teachers.
The new HC has us do gradesheets still, but the process is a little different. Still every week, but tutorials are daily and punishment is for missing tutorials daily. Either way you do it gradesheets are awesome. They are a pain in the butt to deal with, but so is losing a kid to grades.

Same topic, different slant.
Last year I emailed all of our teachers significantly after the season and said something to the effect of even though we're no longer in football season, perhaps I/we can help if a student from our roster is having difficulty in school socially, academically or behaviorally.
It was a great two-for-one b/c I genuinely want to see our kids succeed and we were able to bank some points with faculty.

I make each of my players take this sheet to each of thier teachers every Friday. I have breakfast duty in the morning so they would see me before they went to homeroom and pick it up.

Attachment DeletedThis is what I use (BELOW) Coach. In season, EVERY freshman does it every Wednesday. (ABOVE is a notification to parents.) Also, any kid who has ever been ineligible does it every week. Any kid with under a 2.5 does it every other week. Many teachers will complain. Have GOT to get principal/AD support on this. Don't surprise the teachers. Lastly, have to stick by your rule if you don't get it back. Mine has been = don't return form Wednesday after practice, don't play Friday night, I don't care who you are. Again, make sure your AD will support you on this! I've only had to sit one kid in 8 years of coaching for not bringing his form. An offensive starter.
