What does everyone think about how important routine is…We are very heavily routine oriented in everything we do. Pre-game is the same every Friday, from team meal to the time we arrive to the time we stretch. Each days practice is the same every week (time wise) we have the same amount of Indy time every Monday and then Tuesday it is a little bit less with more team…Drills do very from day to day and new drills to serve similar purpose of old drills are introduced.
My question to all of you is how important do you feel it is to keep some semblance of routine week in and week out?
Also, if you have any articles on this I would love to see them.
Thanks Hoptions

Order is the absence of Disorder. To teach, you must remove all the variables to build the concepts.
With routine, we avoid the distractions of the unknown. We relieve the anxiety of what could happen and leave the game as a series of individual movements tied together with an expected outcome. Routine reinforces muscle memorization and how to train the body as a machine.

"Players don't get bored, coaches do."
I think players appreciate knowing what to expect day to day - routine, as it were. Changing up the individual drills, warmup, and conditioning you do, kicking in the middle of practice instead of the end, doing goal line offense one day and 3rd and 7 the next; those are variations wthout changing the structure.
Also, seeing new offensive and defensive schemes from your opponents week-to-week provides some relief from boredom for both kids and coaches, too.
I guess what I'm saying is we have a practice routine we follow for the most part because we believe this is the best way to prepare to win. It also keeps us from overlooking anything in terms of game situations.

We keep our game day routine always the same. Practice we will change up from time to time just to keep it a little more fresh. Its seem that if you do the same thing everyday of the week that the kids will get bored and not put the effort in that they should.

No that I feel refreshed on this…I guess I just needed to hear this form you all. My next question:
Team meal 3hr 15 min before the game We arrive 2 hours before the game Walk the field, dress/tape, special teams meeting, Defensive meeting, and Offensive meeting, WR/RB/QB/K/P/C go out for ball drills, 15min later the rest come out and we warm-up and stretch, break up into individuals for 10min, team O for 5 min. Play the game and WIN.
This sound about right to you
We have a regional final game this Saturday at 1pm. (only 8 teams left in our division) The drive for us would be about 4 hours. We are getting charter busses. Are not being allowed to leave Friday night and stay in a hotel. We would have to leave at about 6 am at the latest. Some of our kids live half an hour away form the school meaning some get up at 5 am
My question is why we are not going down the night before and would you all be going down the night before?

We eat 3:30 hours before a home game.
We take a charter bus (paid for by our Touchdown Club or out of my fundraising account) on all trips over 30 minutes. We would go the night before.
My college coach said, "You have to get to the game early so you can worry."
