Does anyone have a social media policy in their extracurricular policy that they would like to share? I am trying to develop something to address social media within our athletic program.

Don't do anything stupid. If you think it might be stupid don't do it. We had some players get in trouble for Twitter a couple of years ago to the point one was expelled from school. I think it's fresh enough that the kids know what not to do.

Always thought about something like this. Don't want to have them adhere to a policy so much as educate them on the responsibility that comes with having a platform to speak on. A lot of kids just don't understand that they're being held accountable for cyber BS because they don't treat the virtual world as the real world. They think it's separate. They don't understand that cyber reality BS can have real world ramifications.

I've always said it this way. Before you say or do something, ask yourself this. Is what I'm about to do going to help or hurt myself or the program.

Our athletic department set a social media policy a year ago and we are phasing it in. The intent is that if you are part of a team you do not post any demeaning remarks about team or teammates on social media outlets.
If something is reported each coach has a right to deal with it. First offense can either be a warning if it is deemed minor or a week suspension if perceived as major.

The team we played in the playoffs this year had a kid suspended for the game because of a race themed tweet he sent out.

That staff made their own decision, which we respected. Were we happy about the tweet, no? We did use it as a lesson to our kids to be the bigger person and understand there are still DB people out there. In summer camps we tell the kids you don't have to like each other but you do have to love each other as team mates. There will be no tolerance for intolerance of race, sex, etc.

Our district at this time does not have a "Social Media" policy for athletes.
We did have a player suspended for one game in '10 because he had picture of himself with a cigar on his Facebook page.
Somebody turned him in to AD.
Violated Athletic Code of Conduct.
Mine is the same as it's always been:
Don't do anything to embarrass yourself, family, teammates, school, or community.
If you do, there will be consequences.

Honestly, we've embraced it. It's too big a part of the culture to not do so in my humble opinion.

You dont need a "social media" policy.
You need one all encompassing policy.
Dont Embarrass the Program

You could call it a policy I guess, but really it's more of guidelines. We have it posted in our locker room and make sure we educate our guys. I refer to it every so often.

Similar to others, we do not have a specific policy but we try to educate the kids about what can happen if they post the wrong things. I feel like we talk about this at least once a week to the kids. One other point they should understand is that in a legal sense, the important thing about a post is how a victim takes it, not necessarily how they meant it.

All you can do is educate a kid on the repercussions. If he wants to be a DB, that's on him. Nothing to do with 1st amendment. He didn't go to jail. His civil rights weren't violated. He was suspended for a game - nobody has a civil or legal right to participate in sports, so the first amendment doesn't protect them. Our local HS just kicked a kid (one of their best players) off the hockey team because he posted something about how they sucked after they lost a game. Hockey is a big deal around here, bigger than football by far, so giving this kid the boot was a pretty substantial move.
