I am a college student and I just began coaching middle school football. I need to find out the best coverage systems out of a 4-4 defense for 7th-8th graders, also I need to find some links on the most important things to teach corners and safeties at this level. Anything would help. Thanks

umm all you can really run is cover 1 and cover 3. it is possible to run other coverages but you really gotta move people around. all you need is 1 and 3
especially at that level cover 1 and 3 should work fine
De La Salle runs the 4-4 and is in cover 3 85-90% of the time

Yeah cover 3 was most likely the way we were gonna go, what would you do as far as linebackers in coverage? I don't know if I should have them run some man as well, play for the run only (not a whole lot of passing in middle school) or send them into flats for OLB and hook/curl for MLB.

At that age level do your self a favor and run one coverage and get good at it. Linebackers can drop hook to curl after reading high hats for pass (course at that level the oline tend to give high hat reads every down)...cover three with the 44 is the easiest teach, afterall the field is already divided into thirds with the hashmarks anyhow. each corner plays outside the hash, the fs plays in the middle of the hashes...keep it simple. where you will want to work hard inititially is getting the fs to fill the alley on sweeps and off tackle runs and getting the olbers adn corners to provide run support on sweeps. trust me. also make sure you have a simple adjustment to trips ( ie we rolled up the safety and slid our lbers to make it a 43 look) and you might want a cover 4 where you just take one lber out and add a very deep safety for "prevent"...

Steve: You zone coverage guru, you. mkool65: Obviously Cover 3 will be a big part of what you do, but there are some fairly simple ways to add in another coverage and tie the two together. Download brophy's Multiple 40 Nickel Excel spreadsheet and look for the tab called Cajun (you can find his stuff using the link in his signature block). This shows you a very effective blitz scheme that marries up perfectly with Cover 0 (Man/Blitz), and that also fits in with a vanilla Cover 3. If you do nothing other than run those two coverages, and get good at showing one and running the other, you should have real success at the middle school level. PM me if you'd like more info.

Also does anyone have any links on fundamentals that they need to be taught? I'm a former o-linemen so I am not too familiar with d-back techniques. I really appreciate all of your help.

I'm telling you, brophy's your huckleberry: Pretty sure this guy is your huckleberry yeah, cover 3. Most of the passes you'll see at this level are boots and waggles, so I'd practice rolling the coverage with the QB's roll-out. That'll help the ILB's and FS play the baskside drags and posts.

We have run a version of the 44 the last 2 years(5th-6th grade) and run cover 3 and this year we did more man to man even some match up man to man.

Outstanding post.. Pretty much sums it all up right there..
