Pretty straight forward, what do you coaches do outside of weightroom and spring football in the offseason?
1) Competition Challenges
- We choose 8 Varsity "off-season captains" to be in charge of a group of roughly 9 kids (Grades 9-12). We will have competition challenges every 2-3 weeks that could be based on weight room competitions, sports tournaments, etc for points. Winning team gets awards at the end of the summer. These "captains" are also responsible for getting players in the weight room. We just started ours today, the first thing we will do is have each team create a 1 minute anti-bullying video for "Pink Shirt Day" next week
2) Skill Sessions
- Include 7 on 7/Lineman work, but we also block and tackle without pads in these sessions. There is a team from Northern California we learned this from and implemented it, we thought it was crazy at first but really saw benefit. Our kids' pain threshold increased by a ton. We control the distances, and keep the blocking/tackling within a 1-3 yard amount.
3) Ball Skill Sessions
- One coach on Sundays will take kids and teach them the very fundamentals of catching. It's gone very well for us, and our catching has really improved.
4) Leadership Seminars
- Once every month in the Spring we will run leadership seminars. The same coach that does the ball skill sessions runs these, he goes over certain aspects of what makes great leaders and puts them through activities.
5) Football 101
- All for new players, incoming freshman. Will teach the very basics of the game in a half classroom/field seminar
NEW THINGS WE ARE DOING THIS YEAR:
1) Mental Toughness Seminars
- I am a student at a local college, and we have a great professor who is a sports psychologist. I am going to talk to her this week to speak to our athletes about mental toughness aspects
2) Off-season Workouts with another school
- We are from Canada, so our society does not have a "football first" mentality. So we are driving down to the nearest state and going to a 4A school and working out with their players. Their coach has been accommodating, and he is creating some competition stuff as well for us to participate in.
