We're a school travelling to Texas to play a game next year, and we've narrowed it down to 2 scenarios.
1) We play a very good school who could pummel us, and likely would be then 95% of the teams in our area. They return a QB and RB who are dynamite but don't return much else... but those two are enough to worry us. However they have a great atmosphere and the kids would get to experience that.
2) We play a decent school that we feel we would be competitive and match very well with. The atmosphere there is not that great, so we would likely not experience the whole Friday Night Lights deal.

Are you gettin' paid? Pick the one that puts up the most $$$$. Seriously, I would pick the team we could match up with and have a shot at winning. Kids will remember traveling out of state for a win more than the ambience 10 years from now (I think).

What is the compensation?? You can do a lot of things on the trip to help make it memorable. I would rather have to play a game to win and do some other things to make the trip memorable. Visit a college on the way(football facilities) or something like that. We had a long 4 hour trip this year so we left early went by FSU, did walk through in their new indoor facility, toured the locker room, weight room and the football field. The kids didn't know and were really surprised. It worked out pretty good for us.

I bet your AD won't care what kind of atmosphere you gave the kids when he is reviewing your W-L record.

I think it depends somewhat on how winnable the majority of the games on your schedule are. If the rest of your schedule isn't that strong, I'd go with the team you think is much better. And, vice versa. If you play a tough schedule outside of this game, go with the more "winnable" game.

I think you have to look at who you have coming back. Are you a team that returns a lot of seniors/starters? I think if you have a good group coming back give them a challenge. Especially if you think the rest of your schedule is "winnable". Also, how early in the season is this game? If you are young team you may want to play tougher opponents at the end of the season. Just my thoughts.

If you're near the top with a realistic chance of winning it all and being a perennial power then play the best available competition. If you're still building and the game may affect your playoff standing take the one that you can beat. That said, the money is a consideration.

Joker if you don't mind who are the choices? Might be able to help some. I'm from Texas.

Thanks for all the responses, we're still torn on this one. The school that is much better is bending backwards for us. They're going to put on a banquet for us, making sure we have a JV game as well, they've already provided some tourist attractions in the area for us to enjoy as well during the week. They might be feeding the pig before they slaughter it But to answer some of the responses, no I do not believe we are getting compensated for this game. We are a team that are not bad up front, and we lose some depth but we are pretty deep at the skill positions. The rest of our pre-season schedule are winnable games and we will have 3 competitive league games out of 7. We've had a history of having very good pre-seasons then peaking early. If we play this tough school, it may help in reversing that trend.
