This sign was posted in the window of an athletic director at LSU. I'm not sure parents would let me get away with "blacklisting" a player. I know college is a different culture, on a different level, with much at stake. I was always brought up to "praise publicly, and punish privately." It doesn't always work out like that, but I try. So what do you think? Too extreme or very fitting given the culture at hand? Attachment Deleted

That tactic wont fly at any high school. I can just about guarantee that! Public humiliation/embarrassment will get a school sued. Not a good move by LSU either.

That only flies when you're calling out professionals who are getting paid big bucks to perform.

You couldn't and shouldn't do it in HS but these are adults. If he didn't put the sign up do you think that he wouldn't tell the scouts that stuff anyway?

One word
Bullying
Parents will see, district will pay them to settle
There's no win in this situation for a Hs coach

I think instead of the negative, single out the players that are doing well. List those players.

Victim of late night surfing. I ended up on the link through yahoo sports. I guess that's my own dumb fault for reading anything on yahoo sports. Thanks for the clarification.

It's not appropriate for HS, but scholarship college kids? If you don't like it go play intramurals, brother.

I tell my high school kids the following:
You want to play college ball some day- I will speak to your prospective coach about you You want to be recognized for all conference- I am the one who nominates you You want to be all state- I am the one who nominates you You want to be all league- I am the one who nominates you You want your stats on max preps- I am the one who does the stats and puts them up there You want to be recognized at the post season banquet and receive awards- I count the votes, I submit the names to be engraved on the trophies and awards. You want captain status- I chose the captains You want to be a starter- I set the depth chart You want your highlights on hudl- I am the one who pays for hudl and puts your email on the roster, I am the one who makes Hudl something recruiters can see.
I think I make it pretty clear.

I recognize the kids who are working. And then privately call out those being lazy.

It may be acceptable at the college level, but I don't know if it's effective.

First of all, this probably is not smart in highschool. I also see where the other coaches are coming from when they're saying to turn it into the positive. However... - The positive reinforcement is rather obvious and then not being named while working your ass of becomes harsh. - If you would for instance state 5 out of 100 to be good effort guys, let's say 60 would feel they can make it to the top list if they keep on keeping on. If the coach feels it's mostly about those bottom 40 being the cancers, the positive reinforcement wouldn't help him/them at all. Maybe by calling out those bottom 5 out of 100, he feels that he can address those bottom 40, because now they (and maybe some others) feel that, if they don't put their work in, they'll be blacklisted, resulting in better effort (although for the wrong reasons) Not that I'd do it, I'm just thinking out loud why this specific coach would do this.

I think its fair to say to a college guy..."hes never been a weight room kid" or "I don't know what he squats, I have never seen him in the weight room"
I don't think you need to go and call kids selfish and use that to motivate them. LSU, well, whatever, that's not high school ball.

Don't like it public, but I think most are going to be honest about kids when colleges come around. If a kid is a turd are you not going to tell him he has got problems? Again don't make it public but it's not like your going to lie and say nice things about him when colleges come in. Same for him, prob should not have posted it, but not like hurt their chances of going to pros any different if it was not posted and just told the scouts in private when they came.......and for the post about bullying?? Come on your not serious are you?

Alright, I was hoping that this part would go away but what exacty makes this bullying? singling out the faults of an individual in a way made public..... how is that not bullying? (according to the school board) this is no different, in the eyes of a school board, then you going up to one of your players during a team practice and calling them names or whatever. now again..I will say I don't agree with it, but its the world we created.

LOL never said I agree with what they did....but I do have a question, you have colleges come in and ask about a particular kid who is terrible at school misses workouts and is a selfish individual who cares only about himself. When that college coach ask you about him are you going to lie or are you going to tell him the truth, and if you tell him the truth do you consider it bullying?
Will let you on a little secret about coaching too, there are coaches who have been fired and those who are going to be fired...if someone wants you fired they can make up whatever they want and fire you...just the type of world Some people created....

Yup, most of us are working on our next job and do not even know it. It becomes harder to justify buying a home instead of being a life long renter if you are a coach. In any case, for me personally, when a college guy shows up and asks questions I am honest. I have already been honest with the kids and parents. I tell my guys up front. "Do not say the word scholarship if you are not attending workouts." I just don't think its likely to happen. Not at my school. I give them standards ( 1000 lb club for example) and I tell the kids and parents that I talk about these things with recruiters. The conversation could go like this: "If you look at our board here...these guys are our top lifters. This kid is here." Just honesty. Not bullying.
