As someone who boxed when I was younger this has always been a tough one for me. You see guys who are punchy so its hard to say that it doesn't have an effect.
With studies coming out that say there is no greater occurrence than the general population I'm stating to form a hypothesis that it is both nature and nurture. Simply put those who are prone to develop it do so sooner in life but would have anyways.

That headline drastically misrepresents what is reported in the article.

This is all grossly oversimplified.

This is all grossly oversimplified. Agreed... I just know that there is a reason why students are required to take math and science classes in high school and the number one question I get from my kids in school is: "why do we need to learn this? I won't need this" Anyone who has taken a physics class should at least understand that F=ma. The larger or quicker something happens, the more force is absorbed. Anyone who has taken biology should at least understand that "pain" is the brain's response to FORCE being absorbed by the body, and that the brain does not have nerves, so you cannot feel "pain" in your brain. It can't be that hard to understand at least the bare minimum reality that if you absorb force with your head, you are gonna cause both short-term and long-term damage. To what extent, and to what extent it was football only, vs. recess in elementary school, or the fight you got in in 8th grade after school, or the drunken fall-downs in college (or in coaches office haha) that "broke the camel's back". That requires a lot of math, a lot of data, and a lot more patience than our culture is willing to have. Look at our multi-billion dollar supplement and diet pill industries. Every year "scientifically proven to lose weight" or "lose fat without exercising" and people are paying billions of dollars to mess with their body chemistry, but then are pissed off that messing with their body chemistry causes long-term kidney, liver, or pick an organ failure. Same thing that pisses me off about everyone being so "offended" at PED's. I don't recommend them, or express my opinion with my players/students, but at what point does someone just WATCH THE COMMERCIALS THAT ARE OBVIOUSLY SELLING TONS OF THINGS IN THIS COUNTRY TO EVERYONE... Cialis, Viagra, Rogaine, etc... etc... etc... all performance enhancers in one form or another. I find it completely hipocritical that people are more than willing to take a "PED" to get laid, but think that a 6'5" 240lb guy who makes his living off of being able to recover from the physical beating his body takes is a "cheater" or a liar, or even worse, when people say they would REALLY throw 20 million dollars away just so they didn't take a pill that would "enhance" them. I'll get off the soap-box, but all of these decisions are being made by people who don't know enough about the data they are being presented to be able to make a good decision for themselves. I am worried that my son may not be able to experience what I truly believe is the greatest sport in the world that teaches a young man more about himself and how to deal with adversity and failure than any test ever could.

That's pretty funny... I also love the scene in Dazed and Confused when the pregnant woman is buying liquor and cigarettes and the clerk says, "make sure you eat lots of green vegetables..." lol.
