I have heard a lot of people on this board talk about going to watch spring practice or possibly some NFL training camps. I'd love to do this, but do you need "an in" somewhere or do most of these organizations simply allow other high school coaches to watch practice and or meetings? What is the process for doing this? It is as simple as calling up these univerisities and asking? Like I said, I'd love to spend my spring time watching some spring ball on the weekends.

Most colleges have open practices and many now offer clinics after practice. You can call the school and get a list of dates they are practicing. Most schools practice mon-thur. I find spring break is the best time to get out and see a school if I can. Some schools give more access than others. I have been to USC practices and I would just walk over to the DL area and watch and stay out of the way. No one every told me to get lost or behind the ropes. The rope area was too far away for me to get anything out of being there. That was awesome watching Orgeon (sp?) coach thoses guys (Cody, Patterson, and the like). Some places if you work it out you can shadow the coach during practice and ask questions in between drills. I would recomened doing it every year or every other year at least once.

if you ever have a chance to get to the Oklahoma Spring Practices you need to go. THose coaches are great when on the field. All the position coaches are miked so you can hear them and they are teaching the players and thenm will point out a coaching point for the coaches. It is amazing to watch.
Being from Oregon, I have had many chances to watch the Oregon practices up close. When Chris Peterson was teehre, he would have you shadow him, which was awesome. And if he knew you fairly well (eg worked several camps with him) he would let you in on the position meetings too. The coaches arent miked like the OU coaches, but you can drop by and if they know you, you get even closer access.
Still working the NFL angle right now. One of our school secretary's son-in-law is the trainer for the AZ Cardinals.

another coach (who apparently is tight with the Redskins) let me know that you should call the assistant to the general manager (or assistant to the head coach ) for NFL organizations and schedule a time to meet (for training camp / OTA) as long as you explain your situation.
I tried with the Bears because I was really interested in learning Terry Shea's offense (Al Saunders / Martz / Vermeil)...but no one ever returned my calls....
Every college I've talked to was more than welcome to host me to watch their practices or make any visit to their campus.
