Hello, friends! Just looking for a little advice from the crowd. A portion of our staff usually takes a visit to a college during spring ball and we're currently having some trouble thinking of a spot for this year.
We visited Villanova two years ago and traveled to Chicago (Northwestern) last year. Both were tremendous experiences. We were going to do Duke as they're heavily recruiting our QB but their spring ball is in February!! Crazy. Seems like more and more schools are moving up spring ball to right after signing day.
So, we're looking for a good school to visit - preferably somewhere in the East. Villanova and Northwestern were both fantastic - they gave us full access to their meetings, practices, film, etc. We're looking for that type of access - have any of you had positive experiences with any universities?
Of course, we use this as an opportunity to take a little trip for ourselves. So, if you have a recommendation in a cool place that's all the better, haha!
Thanks!!

Of course, we use this as an opportunity to take a little trip for ourselves. So, if you have a recommendation in a cool place that's all the better, haha! Thanks!! What are you looking for? What kind of offense and defense do you run? Well, those are both very valid points, haha. We're a spread, no-huddle based offense. We throw the ball a lot - rely very much on intermediate routes, our crossing game, etc. Definitely preach the 'throw short, run long' approach. We're blessed to have a Division I QB returning next season so that should continue to be our staple. I think we'll find something useful from just about any collegiate offense though. Defensively, we primarily run a 4-4. We're an aggressive, attack-oriented defense. We were fortunate to have a safety last year that allowed us to do so much with our defense. He was a senior but we have a solid replacement.

Penn State? New staff. Probably very welcoming and good hosts as wanting to show their best face as a new crew. Franklin ran a west coast offense and a 4-3 hybrid defense, so I don't know that they will serve you in that regard. But from a hosting standpoint, I heard they are high energy and fun to be around.

Well, we're a school just outside of Pittsburgh..the head coach and I are both Pitt fans. So about that...
Haha, in all seriousness though, I'm sure Penn State would actually be a great spot to visit under Franklin. He sure comes off as impressive. In fact, our original plan before Duke was to go visit Vanderbilt - our head coach has a connection to Franklin's staff. But, obviously, that all changed!
I think we're looking to explore a little more - we're pretty familiar with what Penn State has to offer.

Brady Hoke at Michigan is great, and very accommodating. Pretty cool place to visit also. Our staff has been there twice (from SoCal) and we're doing Wisconsin this year. Brady might even go have a beer with you.

UNC was very open to a buddy of mine's staff last spring. They are similar on offense to what you stated. South Carolina and Clemson staffs are welcoming. I have sat in at SC and Morris at CU has always been open at clinics.

But I understand you wanting to spread your wings a little. East coast, hmmm...Rutgers, UConn (new staff), Boston College? Just thoughts...

Oregon is a great place if you can get there. They have a week that they dedicate to talking to HS coaches. It's kinda' a clinic, but the Oregon staff will talk about whatever the coaches want.

Not trying to hijack this thread but do you think colleges would allow a guy not affiliated with a school to visit?
I'm a junior in college looking to get into coaching upon graduation and would love to visit some of these colleges.

I'll be at this, end of February. Had a buddy that went last year and had a great time. A lot of one on one with the coaches. He still stays in contact with a couple of the assistants.

I'd love, love to go to Oregon. Just quite a hike for us from Pittsburgh though.
Honestly, we may end up back at Northwestern, haha. We're looking into Fordham, Boston College, and Virginia Tech as well. Chicago was just such a fun town (plus, the Pirates are playing at Wrigley the week we're looking to go - that sure helps, hah!).
Thank you all for the suggestions!

The University of Central Florida. You will love Orlando!! Hmmm. That's an intriguing possibility. I wouldn't mind visiting Orlando in March or April - plus, I have family there. As far as getting access, mikesmd77, most colleges are very, very receptive to high school staffs visiting during their spring schedule. We've usually gone to places where our head coach has some sort of relationship with a coach on staff - that definitely helps. But, still, if you contact the football offices and let them know your intentions they'll usually give you access.

I second Rpixton. Coach Leach and his staff are all great guys who know their stuff. I went there last spring, and they were extremely generous with their time.

I think we have it down to Northwestern, Virginia Tech, or one of a few schools in the Boston area.

How do you guys go about contacting coaches at schools like Oregon?
We're in the Pacific Northwest, but we coach at a relatively small school in Washington and have never done a spring ball session at a college. Who do you call/email? How do you get access? What's the procedure for all this stuff? I actually have family in Eugene so a built-in place to stay, but not sure how to go about getting the OK from the Oregon coaching staff. We've never had a kid they recruited so we don't have any connections there.
