So a former jc teammate of mine I found out last year has been coaching small college ball for a few years and is now a coach at a d1 that I've always really liked what they do run game wise.
Ihaven't talked to the guy in 15 years or so but we were pretty tight in college and I'd really like to get some info from him and maybe fly to spring ball.
I've cliniced with some alumni that coach at various levels and done the local college thing but never really tried to contact a college coach at this level.
so any advice from coaches that do this sort of thing I'm pretty sure it would be cool to talk to him but I don't want to come off as offensive or needy.

What's the problem? You know the guy. Call him and ask him what you want to ask and if you could visit. You probably should wait until after signing day because right now he's really busy.

I agree with fantom. I've called and emailed plenty of college and HS coaches in the past to either ask them questions or inquire about visiting practice, and never once have I received a flat out "NO".
There may have been times where my schedule or their schedule didn't end up working out, or something else may have come up, but the great thing about this profession is that football coaches love to share. Some guys are more paranoid than others, but others, especially all the spread and air-raid guys that I've talked to in the college game are pretty open for the most part, unless you're asking for a copy of their playbook or something.

Thanks coachs completely forgot about signing day. As a whole I've had plenty in the profession willing to share ideas but as far as big time colleges and d1 guys never tries with out those with direct ties to the school. Didn't want to be to bold and asking about how's why's and when's as well as how to correct and drill gap schemes with a guy I haven't talked to in years. Was just interested in decorum something I'm very poor at.

Call and ask. Find out from secretary when the best time to contact them would be. Find out if their speaking at any clinics and ask if you can have some of their time to discuss areas of interest while offering by them a drink. Be persistent! I don't care how long it has been, just ask. I used to coach with a guy 6 years ago and we were very close and for whatever reason (life) we grew apart, changed schools and never talk. I called him in for an interview this week and he said when and where. Life makes us grow apart from a lot of people and we become lazy in keeping in contact. Make an effort to keep in touch in some way and you never know when you may need something.
