We knew we were going to be a very young team this year. But when I put it down on paper it looks worse:
Offense:
X - Junior RT- Sophomore RG - Sophomore C - Senior LG - Junior LT - Junior TE - Sophomore Z - Senior RB - Junior* FB - Sophomore QB - Sophomore * one returning starter
Defense: SDE - Junior DT - Sophomore NT - Junior DE - Sophomore W - Senior* M - Senior* S - Sophomore CB - Junior* CB - Senior FS - Junior* SS - Sophomore* * 5 Returning Starters
So here's what we have going into camp:
6 - returning starters on both side of the ball 4 - Starting Seniors 8 - Starting Juniors 9 - Starting Sophomores
This is for a 4A school! I can't recall a 4a program fielding that young of team in a long time. Our incoming group of seniors is one of the weakest teams athletically I have ever seen. It's not just football, it's across the board. We only have 14 seniors out and only 4 of those will play. We only have a couple Juniors pushing for playing time, the rest are Sophomores.
We go to camp Sunday. Mon-Thurs we will scrimmage for 4 different teams each day. About 35 minutes each session. We will be facing some tough competition! Most of the schools are bringing 75-80. We are bringing 60.
Obviously we are very anxious on how they'll hold up against some really tough 4A programs. They need to learn and gain experience - hope they don't get throttled and hang their head. Defensively we should be able hang. Offensively we are hoping that the two studs we have in the backfield can make up for a what is essentially last years Freshman O-line.
Any suggestions? We are trying to keep it simple.

I don't have any great advice but I can empathize with you. We are 5A and we have maybe two seniors on def. and 3 on offense. Our senior class is weak as well. All we are doing is going with what we got and hope that we can continue to get them to absorb coaching. There is some potential, but it has been a long offseason.
Just wanted to let you know you are not alone.

Man thats unreal. I just cant believe that!
What system do you run? You may need to do something different to make your opponents uncomfortable.
I can't believe you dont have more seniors. Can you recruit more kids to come out??!?!
If its not too late try to ligthen the load of your schedule. The worst thing you can have is an extra tough schedule and get it handed to you every game...

Funny thing is that we should still win 5 or 6 games. We have 3 division games that would be hard to win. 4 division games that we should win in spite our youth. A couple that are a toss up.
We are young but we have two or three special kids and good size on our line. Our Junior running back will certainly go Div 1 if he can qualify in the classroom. We have a returning LB / FB that led us in tackles last year as a Freshman. He's a monster 5'11" 215lbs (Bench 310, Squat 435, Cleans 285, 40yd 4.72) he anchors our defense and we would be shocked if he wasn't first team all elague based on what he did as a Freshman. Our Line is composed primarily of Sophmores, all but one of those boys exceed 250lbs and have pretty good feet. THey should be one of the best lines in the league next year.
So when you look at us athletically, we are in fairly good shape. THere just babies, with very little expereince at the Varsity level. I expect that we will get better and better as the season progress'.
THere is no incredible story on why we have a shortage of upper classman. Our incoming Senior Class is the least talented, least athletic class any of us have ever seen. There's not an impact kid we could get to turn out from the Senior Class, that isn't out. There are a few (3) incoming Juniors that could compete for spots but they have huge character issues (grades, drugs and alcohol). We don't recruit those types of kids, if they come to us and committ to getting there act together that's one thing, we never recruit them. Our expereince shows that they drag the team down and are normally very selfish players.
We will try to get favorable match ups early in camp. We know some of the bigger, better programs want to face us. Hopefully we can start slow and ease into facing some of the perienial state powers. We aren't expecting a lot from the boys. Minimize mistakes, hustle, get better every day. They will get there ass handed to them a couple teams and will have to chin up and take their medicine.
I have already warned then and told them that if they get knocked on their ass get up and smile, in another year they'll be the ones dishing it out. One thing to be certain Sophmores will become Juniors!

Coach, I think you'll be fine. My belief is that much of the outcome stems from the demeanor and attitude of the coaching staff as to how the kids will respond. In my opinion that is exactly what camp is for... get good film and evaluate weaknesses and the best possible way to strengthen them. In addition you shed more light on what your teams strengths may be and how to make them even stronger.
No one wants to get it handed to them but there is something to be said about trial by fire! I say go after them, get your coaches to coach their butts off and in turn you players will play there butts off. When coaches coach hard and players play hard good things happen.
Good luck!

Hey man, just because they are young, dont let it worry ya. Just like Tiger said , alot of it depends on the staff and how they respond. I would worry too much, because it means that you will be in good shape for the next few years it looks like. I wouldnt be the least bit suprised if you guys do really well this year!

i know how you feel, my team last year had 25 sophomores and only 4 seniors started and 3 juniors, we were basically a JV team playing varsity but we had the best record my school had had in 10 years. Biggest thing is dont beat the kids up for making mistakes, theyre gonna make mistakes but look at Camp as a litmus test. See which of these guys can play for real and the areas you need to improve on and really stress those areas during your summer practices. And really try to keep the kids you have, by the time they are seniors they should be good, you gotta keep the team together and develop your youth into great players for the next 3 years
