Can anyone tell me why teams continue to kick the ball to Devin Hester? Today vs Denver he has two returns for TDs. In high school if we saw a player as dangerous as him we would rather kick it out of bounds or squib it. I just wonder if there is some "advantage" or reason NFL teams (supposedly coached by the best in the business) continue to play Russian Roulette with the Bears?

Its that machismo thing..
You know... like playing chicken... the knife through the fingers game... dating multiple women while married...
Just doesn't make sense.

Just think of the bears if they didn't have him? They would average less than 10 points a game probably.

Ha, Ha! Think about it as a financial choice? We're paying 10 guys, (x amount of thousands) of dollars per kick-off, to run down there and tackle "one guy".... I mean, this is the NFL, so you gotta figure these are good athletes (no slow guys here). And then a kicker to kick it and maybe fall down in front of the "one guy"? Coach's are getting paid to teach them to run down there and tackle the "one guy", trainers getting paid to patch them up, when they get injured trying to tackle the "one guy". You got that big gatoraid bill, the light bill is high keeping everyone cool in the summer and warm in the winter, while waiting on the bench for the next kick-off. Heck, thats a lot of money being paid out, just to squib kick it every time, lol!

Thing about Hester...he is hit or miss. He muffed a kick earlier in the game that led to a Denver score.

At the same time, you don't have a job as a special teams coach if he keeps returning them on you, so maybe you should just bite your pride one game a year and not kick to him, keep kicking to him and your wife is gonna get mad that you keep moving cities so often.

This is very true Yash, and you're probably right. It would be the common "sense" thing to do. I'm having fun with this dollars and "cents" theory though.

Well save your dollars and cents by turning off the projector, shut down the film room, and just squib it. No gameplanning involved. Kick it to a fat guy and play defense.

I still believe it's not so much Hester as it is the special teams of the bears...Hester gets to much credit. He's good, but, the blocking on those returns was fantastic.

I agree with you Wingt74, you look at it and there are a lot of guys who could probably return those for TDs. Hester probably only made one guy miss per return. Plus the broncos were kicking it right down the middle. Not even directional kicking, right down the middle to the best return man in football. Just stupid.

the raiders kicked to him, a LOT since their offense sucks and they punt a lot (a LOT, they had a 6-3 lead in the fourth) and they managed to totally shut him down. he lost yards several times and almost gave up a safety on a return. he's stoppable... and that was the 3 win raiders...
bad coverage though and he makes you pay...

27 career games -- 10 kick returns for a TD in that career
think the record is only 13 ? ?

Is it me or was their a serious block in the back on the punt return? That end zone shot shows it pretty well. Either way....the guy is deadly.

Coach Huey, the NFL record is indeed 13 by Brian Mitchell...
They do not count his Super Bowl return and his return of a missed field goal for his total.
The Bears special teams unit is good, but IMO, Hester is the straw that stirs that drink. I will take his hit or miss status Wildcat, b/c in my mind he is by far the most dangerous player on the Bears (not saying much - kinda like be the tallest midget in the circus) and he for sure is the best returner in the NFL.
I think he soon will be regarded the best returner in NFL history, b/c enough of these coaches will think they can cover him.

i think alot of teams will try and kick it to him and then tackle him so they can show that there special teams are amazing but then again the only team i really ever saw kick it to him and stop him from doing and real big damage was the raiders so all in all kicking to him is like shooting yourself in the foot even though u were aiming to the sky

I think the Detroit Lions held him in check too. They did it with a lot of trick/different kick off formations and player movement, and they utilized directional punting as well.
The kick off formations were great to see - just wished I had a copy of them on tape. Some neat stuff I am sure others could use when playing a team on your own level who is a stud returner.
