We had a dismally attended banquet last night. Actually wasn't too surprising given the level of overall commitment from some of our players this year.
Anyway, do any of you hold your banquet when you're still in season (like towards the end of it)?
We do the typical acknowledge the team, give awards, say something nice about each senior, etc.
Looking for any ideas on what makes your banquet a success.

I would never hold a banquet to give out awards while the season is going on---talk about creating problems. You are right, though--the more commitment you have from players in your program, the better attended your banquet will be. If they're coming to offseason workouts and all team activities year round, they will also be at the banquet.

Give it to the parents to organize during your season. let them email , collect payment, reserve the banquet hall and get the pictures/film clips together.
during your last game post game speech remind kids that the banquet will have trophies, letters, certificates, highlights and most importantly, grub.
you might also choose to announce the following season captains at the banquet. this will get your leaders there.

I just looked at a program in Colorado. Pretty successful. But, they had their banquet the Sunday before their final regular season game. I thought it was interesting.

We had our banquet the Wednesday before our last regular season game. Have done that for the last 3 years. It has made our long, boring banquet into an exciting pep rally. The parents do most of the stuff (food, decoration, etc.)and our freshmen, JV and varsity are there. Each coach briefly talks about their players so every parent hears something positive about their kid. . Varsity gives awards and the captains speak. I hate banquets with a passion but I have sort of enjoyed having it at that time of the season. We went all the way in the playoffs and the parents wanted another one. I said no so a local business had a buffet.

Heck no!
I haven't been a coach of a banquet that didn't have some kind of whining or drama. No way I would do that before the season even ended!

I've always seen parents complain about this kid getting an award, that kid not getting an award, yada yada yada
Theres no way I'd want those lingering sentiments joining us in the postseason

We let the kids and coaches vote for the awards- not much to argue about.

How can you have a banquet before the season ends? Maybe we are different but we usually have it mid January. Our season ends Thanksgiving or first week of December so it gives you plenty of time to get everything together. We give out plaques, our playoff or state patches, all state plaques, and our highlight film.

We obviously had a backup fill in for those weeks. Our defense was not the same and when our kid was back from injury and took over, we dominated and had a great run. Well this kid was voted as our MVP (by players) the DC spoke about what a tremendous player he became (all conference, 3rd all state) and what he meant to the team. That next Monday the HC is in a parent mtg with principal and family of the player who subbed in. They were outraged and were going to go to central office demanding his head because their son was indirectly ridiculed in front of team and families because they thought that the kid winning MVP was a smack in the face of the player who filled in. Sometimes you can't win with parents..... Sent from my VS980 4G using proboards

We just had ours. Gave out 6 awards (33 guys on the team) and they were all a "coach's award" type. Not for playing, no MVP, etc, just character-community-grades-effort... ONE parent complained that she wasted money on the banquet because her son deserved a certificate of completion for the season! I thought that was a joke about Americans, not a reality! We have an all sports awards ceremony for letters/pins/certificates in May. This was a 4 course meal from a fancy local Italian restaurant for $15 for parents and siblings, free for the players... and the funny thing is I gave her youngest son a free ticket just because.
