I am the HC at a school that is 4 years old and I have a kid who has busted his rear for four years and made himself into a starter by senior year after he entered with very minimal talent. I want to give him an award at our banquet next month and can't think of a name to call it. Basically I'd like it to be a lifetime achievement award but can't call it that because it's for their high school career. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Call it the "Coaches Award" this player has obviously done all the things that you would want all of your players to do. You could talk about the player being dedicated, committed, and all the other things that we look for in players.

So are you saying you want to create an award to give just this one kid or to give every year whether anyone has earned it or not? Hell, if this is the first kid to do this to the point he should get his own category, name it after him!

I agree... mascot name
at my alma mater we were the red devils
the award was the Red Devil Award
it was supposed to encompass a great attitude, work ethic, sportsmanship
at my current school the award is simply called the coaches award
i dislike that name because then it just sounds like teacher's pet (or in this case coach's pet)

Our school mascot is the Huskies... Our award for that exact thing is called: "The Heart of the Husky Award"
It is the award that comes on the largest plaque, it is the last one handed out at the ceremony and it is the one that gets that player put on the "athlete of the year" wall for our sport. We tell them this award is EVERYTHING we want in every player in the program. Even more than the Off MVP, Def MVP, ST MVP, etc...

Kind of a play off of a military slang term, but I used to give a "Hard Charger" award. It was based on the same traits in players that your guy displayed. Anyway, kudos for wanting to honor a kid like that. They are what coaching is all about.

For some reason, I keep thinking of the "Rudy" award and smiling. I agree with the idea of the mascot followed by the word "Pride"

Could name it after a local community member or city pioneer. At my old school we had the "Millard Trophy" that was named after a former player who was tragically killed in the war. I realize your school is only 4 years old but ask around and see if any local community members (past or present) have done something noble or honorable. Great way to get the community involved in your program.

We had a similar kid who did not win any of our awards - his nickname was showtime - play on his last name, not because he was a show boat....
So it is the showtime award - and we only give it out when someone is deserving...
2 times in 5 years....

we have a "Heart of the Cougar" award which is basically our MVP award and our second highest award is the "Team Player" Award. We Also give an "Ultimate Cougar" award for kids that have made 100% of workouts and practices for four years and an "Iron Cougar" Award for kids who did it for one year.

If you want it to be a hard work, leave it on the field type of award, we call ours the Man in the Glass award. Read the poem of the same name, its awesome.

We call ours the "Retired Jersey Award."
No one may wear the player's number the following year and the jersey is displayed in our trophy case with framed picture of him and the award description.

Ours is named after the mother who started our program. The lady who went to the AD and said "I don't want to send my son to the parochial school but he wants to play football, let's start a team." She then went out and raised a ton of money and put in the leg work herself. Couldn't tell you anything about her kid but her legacy is important for us to remember because without her effort we wouldn't play today.
My take on award concepts:
Ring of Fame Award: This is the ultimate award and the name and number of the player gets painted around the top of the fieldhouse and inside the locker room. This person is often an MVP or Founder's Award winner. Has always been a senior but doesn't HAVE to be a senior.
Offensive MVP: Obvious. Any player.
Defensive MVP: Obvious. Any player.
Most Improved Player: He needs to have improved due to hard work on and off the field. Not usually a senior and not always a varsity player.
Newcomer of the Year: Usually the "freshman of the year" award but it has been given to a single junior before who switched sports and was a monster with a great attitude.
Coach's Award: This is our "Program Founder's Award" that is described above. It is given to the kid who works hard, has a great attitude, does well in the classroom and in the community. Usually, but not always a senior.
Mascot Award: This is an academic award that also factors in attitude, dedication to the program, and has factors financial need of the player as the deciding factor. Ability isn't a factor and we've given this to a kid who never started a varsity game. This award comes with a pretty nice scholarship. We've been able to pay an entire year's tuition for a kid at our state's flagship university although it usually isn't quite that much.

When I last coached we had a "heart of the Panther" award. Given out to those players who embody everything you want your program to be about. We have this award in all of our sport and club programs. At the end of the year we make it a big deal at our school with local celebs and such.
