Our admin sent out an announcement to the student body that noise makers like jugs filled with gravel or marbles will not be permitted at athletic events because it is unsportsmanlike. Also I was told that the admin came and took down
My question is why? They are making noise! Not jeering the other team. If they were shouting obsenities that would be one thing but making noise? I'm sure our state has some no-fun rule out there but I have never seen a school ever enforce it.
Anyone else have these issues?

That is horrible...
One of the highlights of football season at our school is when the middle and grade school art classes make noisemakers out of milk jugs for the playoffs. The kids bring them in and the art teachers take a day and let the kids use paint to decorate the bottles with school colors and player's names and jersey numbers. Then they take them to the game and hand them out to people as they come to the game.
What brought this on?

We have the same deal. I want to say that the MSHSL has a no artificial noise maker rule in place. Our number one rival used to have hundreds of cowbells in their crowd and they have not had them the past couple of years. stupid rule IMO.

Anyone else have these issues? how exactly do they plan to enforce this? of I was a kid and heard of this rule, I would come up with some other kind of noisemaker that didn't fit the rule and then use it no marbles in a jug eh? how about two blocks of wood? clack clack clack clack

what i dont get is how "no noise makers" doesnt seem to imply that a team cant shoot off a cannon after a score...man those are loud.

Hey, lets just make fans sit quietly and watch the game. Cripes it just gets ridiculous sometimes. This is a rule as an AD I think I would just ignore. As long as it is in good taste, how is crowd noise unsportsmanlike? I mean what are the fans there for? While we are at it lets tell the band not to play, it might offend the other team. Cripes!

Look at the other side of the coin...........We played a team like coachjd said, had cowbells, not hundreds but 30-40. How would you like to be the fan sitting next to 3-4 cowbells ringing nearly non-stop for 2 1/2 to 3 hours. I know on the football field it was sickening, if I was in the stands I would want to stick that bell up someones....... We are a small school stadium, we have seating on only one side of the field.

I guess having a B-52 Bomber buzz the stadium like Air Force does is out of the question then? Now that is loud, and an awesome sight!

We blow horns like crazy. Our AD came in and said we, as coaches, have to get our faithful supporters to stop doing this. We said okay and then didn't do a thing. Tradition outweighs this. Make the friggin refs throw a flag on us.
Never hurt anyones feelings in the past and now we have to comply? The world is too PC. Let the fans do what they want!!!
