Coaches, I am just wondering how far some of you commute. What is the furthest you would be willing to commute to go from an assistant coach to a head coach?

I live in the town I coach at right now, but for a HC job I'd travel about 30-35 minutes each way.

Its 30 minutes from my house to the HS in my town. Its 5 minutes to where I coach. Its 20 minutes to where I teach. Its 15 minutes from where I teach to where I coach. I drive by the school I coach at to get to the school I teach at.
I'd commute an hour to an hour and a half (almost the entire state) for an ideal teaching/coaching position. However I know the guys I'd want to have on staff wouldn't want to drive that far for an assistant position so it wouldn't end up working out.

I live 1 mile from my house currently. First two years here I drove 30 mins to be HC, but the plan was always to move down here. I don't really think you can do an effective job as a HC if you live far away. I had to be really organized and just didn't get some things done being a half hour away. Now, I can get in here literally at a minute's notice to take care of something.

I commute 20 minutes one way, about 15 miles.
Would take a really good job to get me to go beyond that, especially with gas prices these days.

I live about five minutes from where I coach and about fifteen in between work and practice. It's hard not being extremely close for all three when you're not a teacher. I coached at a school that was an hour away from where I lived when I worked graveyard for a year. Only reason I did it was because my high school head coach needed the help and asked me personally. When family asks for help, you help. Other then that, never again. I'd probably commute now about thirty minutes tops.

When I changed jobs recently I doubled my commute: from one mile to two.
It's been a while since I had any interest in being a HC but when I was interested I would have been willing to commute n hour each way. However, that arrangement would have been temporary because the plan would have been to eventually move closer. On a permanent basis I'd probably do no more than a half hour each way.

Just moved last December after commuting between 20-30 minutes as an assistant and first year HC. I can now see the football facilities from my drive way and it is 5 minutes to the HS (weight room)and 10 to the MMS where I teach. We made this move so that my children would be in the district that I teach without having to go through the same commute.

Thanks guys. I'm looking at something about a half hour away. I know there are guys here with commutes far longer than that. Was just wondering if I could do an effective job as referenced above by larrymoe.

- 10 minutes - 30 minutes - 40 minutes - 75 minutes - 12 minutes - 30 minutes
These are all AC jobs. I can't see how being an AC is different than being a HC, at least from how I approached working. For the last 14+ years I've spent as much if not more time in the school than the HC has. I've always ended up having a master key to open and close the building where I have worked.
That being said, I have made a concerted effort to change this habit. I'm 44 with a just turned 4 year old, a 10 year old, and a 13 year old who really needs her Daddy.
It really depends on what the commute does to your relationships. If a 30 minute ride helps you vent off steam over the latest hassle as HC so that you can walk on the door and be super dad/husband, then that is great commute. If it leads to a wedge between you and your family life, or if you get how and then vent to the wife and kids for 45 minutes, then that is too much.
The biggest disconnect I've encountered with a long commute is that my family is always left out of the social time that helps brings good staffs together; because 'its too far away' for the posse to be there.

This is great feedback and you make some good points. I do currently spend far more time than the HC doing things. I'm always the last to leave, and spend a ton of time game planning. Probably more than he does. The hours would be no different, and that 30 minute drive could do good. I decided to throw my name in for the job. We will see if anything comes of it.

30 minutes one way for my last job (2 years as HC)....It wasnt a bad drive, I got pretty used to it. The worst part was coming home from long away trips (some of our games could be 4-5 hours away. Then having to try and drive home through mountain country very late (or early however you look at it). Lots of Elk and Deer out. I started catching a few hours snooze at the field house if I needed to and then finishing up and going home. Other than that the commute wasn't bad at all, EXCEPT FOR FUEL IN MY TRUCK!

Pending traffic, 20-40 minutes. Pretty much every spot Ive been at has been about that far of a drive. I'd probably be happier at 10 minutes, but in the same vein I dont want to see my students and players everywhere.

I live a mile away from the school in a house that the school pays for. I can't complain about the commute. I'm the one person anyone calls if they need something at the school during the weekends or after school hours.

I have been driving 130 miles (1 way) for the past 2 years (retired/40th year coaching), gave me a lot of time to plan practice, game plan (OC). Bad thing was I could not interact with the kids much besides practice and camps. Head Coach resigned so I will have a shorter commute next season.

I drive 106 miles each day for work and practice. My job is 50 minutes away from my home and my coaching job is 40 minutes from work and it is 30 minutes home from there. It is a big triangle, I was coaching at our current school prior to taking a new position that is 50 minutes aways. I do not mind the drive at this point but I know likely I can not continue to make it for the long haul. It will require us to move or change one of the positions if this is my employment in 5 years.

I'm about 15 min. away. I'd travel up to 30-40 min. Sometimes a good drive to and from can clear the mind. rsmith...Good luck on the job.

I'm currently 15-45 minutes depending on traffic, usually about 28-30 minutes. I'd like to be closer but I didn't have this job when I moved and I couldn't have afforded the houses around where I work.

Just taking things into consideration first. I don't want to waste anybody's time applying and interviewing if it isn't a job I want.

30 - 35 minutes. I enjoy not living in the same small town I teach/ coach in. I can go have a few beers/ got to the movies/ etc. without interacting with players/ parents/ admin. That is nice. I probably wouldn't go much further than this for a coaching job, though. Unless OU calls tomorrow!
