Just trying to get some input with a situation we are dealing with. Our Varsity is 7-0...and our JV is also 7-0, things should be great. We are extremely thin on the Varsity (28-30 players dressed) due to a ton of injuries that we have worked through. We have tried pulling up a few JV kids for depth, with some being on board. Those that have been resistant have given the reason of not feeling ready or they are interested in guaranteed playing time...with their friends. The Sophomore class in general is a very tight knit group...and yes they have talent.
So the Question...how would you handle the JV call-ups for playoffs?

We don't bring Sophomores up during the season unless they are going to start on one side of the ball or other. we don't bring them up just "for depth." They would be better off playing full-time on JVs.
First two years at my current school we brought JVs up for playoffs. They played on Scout teams and served as backups. Some even got in games.
Last year we did not bring them up because none projected as playing and frankly some of them didn't deserve it.
We didn't give them a choice but if someone absolutely refused I don't see how you could compel him.

I may speak for myself this day in age, but if a kid says I'm not ready, don't want to, more worried about playing time, etc, then I'm not wasting my time. I'd tell them I'll remember that attitude come next year. I want guys that are all in. I'll take the 11 guys that want to be there. That's all you need. 28-30 dressing is a better situation than some places.

The same thing is happening at our school and I still don't understand how coaches can't put themselves in the shoes of the kids.
Blb is right. Take them up in season if they're going to start or be a key contributor. Don't bring kids up "for depth". "We only have 30 kids. Let's pull up the five best JV guys so that we can have 35."
What you're telling the kid is "You're not going to be a key player. You're not going to be a team captain. You're not going to start. You may not even play. But, you're going to be going against tougher competition on a daily basis then anybody you've played this season."
If a kid says "I'm not ready. I'm not comfortable. I want to be with my friends." That's his way of saying "No" and he's too intimidated to say it or he doesn't want to let you down by saying it.

During the season we'll have a few "part-timers" who practice with the varsity but play in JV games. I'd never bring a JV kid up if it meant that he wasn't going to play. The playoffs are a different animal. There are no JV games. We'll ask any JV kid who we think can help us for depth, STs, scout team to come up. If they really don't want to, that's up to them. Sometimes it's because they're anxious to get started on their winter sport and that's understandable. In my experience, if he doesn't want to come up just because he "isn't ready" that usually means he's sick of coming to practice and just wants to go home after school. OK, fine but it sends up a red flag. Those kids never pan out as varsity players in the long run.

Ha...first Id find out what my JV coaches are saying to the kids. Second, what size school are speaking about here? Why is your first reaction to distrust your JV coaches? My current school is 408 enrollment. Had 26 kids on Varsity at start of season, down to 21 last two weeks due to injury and ineligibility.

I think it's more important to find out what your JV players who came up are saying. At our school, the JV staff talks up the varsity staff constantly. But, we had two kids go up and both quit because "it wasn't fun anymore". What do you think our kids hear louder?

I had a kid that didn't want to come up his freshman year even though hands down he was the best kid we had. He would have started at DL. He didn't want any part of it.
To date he has been a 10 year starter at OL in the NFL.
Some times they just want to be kids.

In our situation, there are several different things in regard to JVs and Varsity: 1. If you're talking bringing up a kid from JV to play varsity exclusively, we only do it if we have to have the kid and we think he's going to get playing time. I had one at my previous school who didn't want to. His dad even called. I explained it simply: we as coaches decided where they will play. If they don't want to, then don't play. Same dad had kept the kid in Pop Warner through 9th grade so he could be a big fish in a small pond. Kid came around, dad came around, kid had a great career for us. 2. By rule, we can play kids on Thursday and then a limited amount of time on Fridays. We dress out some kids and have them for depth and emergencies. 3. At the end of the JV season, we bring up JV kids to be on the varsity. We bring up those we think can help us on scout teams, those that we think will be contributors the next year on varsity and we can get them a few weeks of practice, and we reward some kids for what they have done on JV. If a kid doesn't want to, we don't make him, but that almost never happens---the only time I can remember is because the kid played basketball. We encouraged him to go ahead and start basketball practice.

We are a school of about 900.
It's not that I distrust the JV coaches at all...good guys, program guys. One of them is not a fan of younger kids coming up, but we only bring up kids if they will play. Right now I'm starting a Freshman @ MLB & my 3rd OG is a Sophomore who gets around 15 snaps a game (non-garbage time). I pulled up the JV QB out of necessity because #2 got hurt as our starting DE...but he even grumbles about not playing JV. HE'S ONE SNAP AWAY for goodness sakes. I just don't understand the lack of desire to compete at the highest level. To me it indicates a level of immaturity and selfishness that I perceive could cause a problem down the road. And I don't want to reward that mind-set by bringing them up for the playoff run and honestly they could contribute. I don't want bag holders I want players but I've never had kids resistant to being called up. It's just a strange occurrence.

Our approach is simple. You cant say no. You cant say now when a coach assigns you to JV, nor can you say no when a coach assigns you to varsity. Its that simple.
Jv exists to prepare a kid for varsity, not to let them whip up in JV.

I've never seen anything like this happen where I am because sophmores through seniors dress for varsity anyway and the non starting sophomore and juniors are the JV team come Monday for their game. We don't have any playing time regulations here for JV and Varsity. A sophmore could play 3 quarters of the varsity game and still play a full JV game on Monday.
