I've been a part of some pretty bad teams with some really good ones on the schedule...
I have put in packages in the past as a means to slow down the game and try to grind away the clock just so the final score wouldn't be so bad...
But, this past friday night we played a rivalry game against a team who didn't have a terrible record... they were 3-4 and have scored a decent amount of points... And we are no world beaters by any means...
Well in the first series of the game their QB is waiting on the reff's hand to raise before he snaps the ball...
Do you feel that is telling their kids, "hey we can't beat these guys, we know they are going to win... we wont need these seconds at the end of the game, so lets just start out running the clock"...?

They might think their best chance to win comes with limiting your number of possessions

Why would you assume that this is about "We can't beat these guys, we know they are going to win?" as opposed to "They are probably the more talented team, but if we can shorten the game, and limit the opportunities for them to press their advantage, we have improve our chances for winning"

Or perhaps, "we're banged up, don't have much depth, let's slow this thing down" or "our defense is not very good, let's keep their offense off the field as much as possible"...lots of reasons for slowing it down
The playing not to get beat bad comes when you're down 3-4 touchdowns and you're still doing that

Apparently for whatever reason, they were doing that because they thought that gave them the best chance to win. I can't fault him for that. If you watch my brother's basketball team play you'd probably think the same thing, but that's the furthest thing from the truth. The real truth is, the longer they can possess the ball on offense...in basketball, by just running and running their offense...the longer the other team plays defense, the less time their offense has the ball, the more tired they get and less likely they are to catch a rhythm offensively. I think the same concept applies here. don't we use that same logic for the up tempo, fast paste offense that are so prevelant and it is seen as an advantage for teams that have lesser talent...the argument cannot be had both ways....

Nobody runs the no huddle to keep the opposing team's offense off the field. They run the no huddle to keep the opposing team's defense on the field and playing at a frenetic pace.
I've been a part of teams that did just what you're saying against vastly superior opponents. It's an approach that has worked. Shorten the game, grind out long drives, win the turnover differential. I don't think its a loser mentality. Trying to go toe to toe in a fight dictates by the opposition with lesser talent, now that's a loser mentality.

I've done that. Where we start burning clock from the first snap. Limit the other team's posessions. Last week we won 36-14. The other team had 3 possessions in the first half. They scored on one. Four years ago we ran 55 snaps in the second half and held them to 13. We had an 11:00 drive to open the second half. Shorten the game.

Saw a team punt on first down the entire game until lat 4th quarter. They got beat 7-0 by a team that was 35 points better than them. Pend them deep all night and played for turnovers. I would never do this but it was a great game plan. The coach is thought of as one of the best ever.

Not sure how giving a team that s 35 points BETTER than you are lots of extra possessions/attempts really is a good strategy....

Keep them inside their 20 the entire game. The guy just retired with 30 something years as a HC. Won 2 state titles at two different schools that have never won. I now he was the HC at 5 schools and won at all of them. I do not like the guy but he is one of the best. This was around 20 years ago and if you watched the game you would understand. Also shut down an opponents jumbo tron. Dressed a guy up as the head of officials association to grade the officiating at an opponents home field. Interviewed an opposing coach as a local radio station announcer to get his game plan. It worked for him!

I dont see why running the ball a few times..running off clock... limiting their possessions etc would be BAD in this situation. Was it weather related?

No. I would never have the nerve to do it and do not know why he did it. They had the ball on the 10 at the end of the game. Played man under with two very deep and made them grind it out. They could not block the other team at all. It the 4th they ran every trick play ever seen and hit one but got ran down at the ten.
