We are 0-6. We have been blown out by teams the last 5 weeks we have no business being on the same field with. We are starting multiple freshmen and sophomores on both sides of the ball due to a number of reasons. We have injuries to seniors that play both ways. We have not scored a point on the road this year. We are giving up over 40 points a game. We are bad.
Now that you've heard the sob story, here's the question. Would you start to practice/game plan for the one team you have a chance to beat and scrap the rest of the season? (We play them on the road in two weeks) If no, why not? If yes, how do you sell it to the kids?

Get them used to the routine. With that said, you can sneak in some game prep for that game. Include part of the game plan for that game in this week's game plan. Don't tell the kids. As far as they know they're practicing for this week.

I would keep repping fundamentals until I couldn't stand myself anymore. Form blocking and tackling, angle tackle, blocking the sled, board drills, 2x2 drills, position group tackling (thud), CPR turnover drill, kicking game basics like staying in lanes, setting the rake, etc... all the things that teach guys the basics. Then I would go through and teach scheme like it's day 1 and go over coverages, fronts, assignments. I quiz the kids on their feet during indie.
At our level I don't expect a lot of Football IQ, but what they shouldn't backslide on is discipline and technique.
Keep fighting, a close loss to a good opponent will help 2 weeks from now with that possible W.

Yes, we lift heavy twice a week. All we work is fundamentals. We have not installed anything in four weeks.

Keep doing what you do. You never know what may happen, you still need to play the game.
Rep fundamentals as previous posters have stated. Blocking, Tackling, Blocking Tackling. Add in some fun drills as the season winds down and ensure that kids understand the importance of the fundamentals.
Maybe add in a trick play to get the kids enthusiasm up and keep their excitement. Maybe the play works early in the game and you give yourself an opportunity to be in a close game.

Coach I understand entirely where your coming from. We are 0-7. With 0 touchdowns and allowed a total of 350 points this season. We have a ton of youth and inexperience. Even my seniors most of which only have 2-3 years of playing organized football. However, we are building for the future and the future is bright, I just hope I'm there to see it get to that point. The school is known for its football has won numerous state championships and district championships. However, this year its just the worst case scenario. I'm in my first year as a Head Coach and I know people are already talking about axing me after this season.
Keep stressing the fundamentals and building for the future. It will get better. It can't be any worse than my situation right now.

This is a good moment to get them into a routine of preparing for opponents for the next year. I think if you look past this week because you have no chance to win the kids will sense that and you will find yourself in some {censored} going into next year.

this is the classic of it not about the scoreboard, but it is still and always will be about winning. You are building for next year day by day...small every day victories that don't necessarily show up in on game night.
