Mon/Tue after school... 3:30-3:45 -- position meetings 4:00 -- "zero" period (pre-practice) kids basically leave the locker room as soon as they get dressed/taped & have a specific thing to do on the field for warmup type stuff 4:10 -- period 1. we have a 24 period practice (2 hours)
wed after school... 3:30-3:45 -- position meetings 4:00 -- "zero" period 4:10 -- period 1. we have a 17 period practice
Thur after school ... 3:45 -- zero period 3:55 -- period 1. we have an 8 period practice
each period is 5 minutes long. We play 1 side of the ball with a few "crossovers" for things like 'goalline offense' or 'nickel defense'. those get worked wednesday & thursday.
Later in the year - usually around week 8 or so, we cut the periods down to 4 minutes. This allows us to keep our same format, just shorter time within the periods.

I always felt that practice time depended a lot on the circumstances I was in. Most of my career was spent in small schools, small numbers, so player retention was always a major factor for me in scheduling practices, scrimmages, and games. When I had an inexperienced/young group we would practice a little longer, and when I had an experienced/older group our practice times would be shorter. About 2 1/2 hours with an emphasis on teaching fundamental skills with the inexperienced kids, and about 2 hours with an emphasis on developing techniques, and reviewing fundamentals with the experienced kids.

A lot of it depends on how hard it is to prepare for the other team's offense in a given week. If it's a good offense that does a lot of things effectively and will require a lot of reps and prep work to be ready for, practice will be longer. If it's a bad offense that does little more than line up in the I formation with two TE's and get stuffed, practice will be shorter. Offensively, we pretty much just do what we do and that's all there is to it.
Generally, I think practice should last between 1.5-2.5 hrs. not counting film and weight room. If it takes you longer than 2.5 hrs. to practice you're probably either trying to do too much or you're not very efficient with your time.
