I was reading some stories about some parent and coaching horror stories. I got to thinking about some funny stories I have from coaching.
The funniest-
1. My first year coaching my oldest son( who was 11 at the time) we a kid on our team, Jimmy. Jimmy was a 5'4 120 pound kid you would look at and say "man that is a football player" but had two left feet, was terrified of contact and was probably the slowest person I have ever seen, he ran a 6.5 second 20 yard dash. He alternated in at DT..tried to play him on offense as our backup center..he couldn't handle the contact. Probably the worst football player I have ever seen, coming from a guy who tries to play everyone as much as he can and takes pride in his weaker players succeeding. Anyways its March and the players are signing up. His mother calls me and tells me Jimmy will not be playing for our org in the fall. I ask where he is playing she replies another local org because "Im sending him to a camp to teach him to play QB so he doesn't get hit". I have to do everything to not laugh out loud over the phone. His parents were nice folks, but didn't know ANYTHING about football.
2. Last year on the 11-12 year old team we were giving our character building session that we do every week. We talked about the value of friendship and what it meant to be a friend. Our fullback/LB that year was a kid named Jack Dawson(yes that was his real name, and he was a great player kid, 2 way starter for us). He raises his hand and talks for a little bit, and says at the end of his comment verbatim "you have to make each day count and do your best because you never know the impact you can have on someone". Great thoughts but all the parents who were listening started laughing and groaning at the irony of the kids comments. His mother calls me the next day and says he was upset because he thought the parents were making fun of him! we had a good laugh after that one!
Craziest
1.This happened last year too. The other B team coach was a real piece of work. Last year he screamed at one of our team moms during jersey handout because his son didn't get the jersey # he wanted. He screamed at her saying "a number represents who he is , it his identity and you stole it!" Her husband got involved and before anything happened he quit albeit some histrionics. Later that year he scrimmages the A teams backups and rubs it in my face after practice. He called us wimps for not scrimmaging them saying that they played them well and they would kick out butts in a few weeks . Mind you his team was 1-3 when this happened and we were 3-1. I told our players about that and they got mad and I told them the week before the game that this game was the only game I would let them run the score up. We wound up beating them 62-12. After the game this guy has the nerve to berate his players for not trying..than comes over to our sideline cussing up a storm at me and tells me to fight him. I tell him if he lays a hand on any of us he is getting his butt sued and never coaching again. My assistant tries to step in to break it up and he shoves him to the ground. Hell breaks out and 2 players dads on our team tackle him to the ground and hold him down in front of all the players. I got a warning from the commissioner for running the score up but the parents sided with me (see what good relations do for you!) and he got kicked out of the league and went to another league to coach his kid. some of our players went to school with his kid, apparently his kid was a real nice kid who is really well liked. He hates his dad for pressuring him with football and that whole incident really embarrassed him, which I hate it for. The other parents who know his dad concur that he is a blowhard to the nth degree.
2. This happened this year on the 6th and 7th B Team. The HC's son was the quarterback on the team. His son was terrified of contact, and in the first game of the year fumbled seven snaps from center. The assistant coach after the game puts the backup QB in as the starter, causing the HC to resign and pull his kid off the team. HUGE controversy in our program this year.
