We are a young team (only 5 seniors, 1 of which is a starter), but very talented. We have good linemen, and are very solid at our skilled positions. With that said, we just can't seem to turn the corner. Offensively, we have linemen who won't sustain blocks and drive through the whistle, we have receivers who let their blocking assignment cross the field from the backside to stop what should be a touchdown, etc. We never have 11 guys do their job on any given play.
Defensively, we have linebackers who won't fill, DBs not getting into their drops.
All of these errors are things we have spent time on over and over, and over again. The bottom line is the kids just don't do what they are coached to do. Traditionally we are a losing program. We are trying to change the attitude and get our kids to play with some pride, but they just aren't getting it.
Anybody been through this mess before? What do you do to get out of this slump?

Film practice and point out good and bad. Praise the hell out of things when they do it right. Keep being a good teacher. Be patient and trust your process. These kind of things take time.

Coach I hear you. We are going through the same thing. Highly frustrating. We play great defense for 95 percent of the snaps then someone doesn't do there job and its time to line up for the EXTRA POINT. We have been in this slump for three years and it keeps getting worse. The quality of athletes we have been getting has dropped way off. We have only had a handful of true olineman over that three year stretch. Heck its week six and we are still searching for answers. 0-5 at this point. I have been telling our coaches to start playing the younger guys and maybe we can just build for next year. We haven't talked about winning all year. In fact I tell the DEFENSE I want them to compete..... if we don't compete we won't ever be able to win. Just looking to find any small victories we can at this point. I have been doing this for 25 years and the last 3 year stretch I have never experienced before. I started to question my reasons to continue on with the lack of impact my efforts are getting. Then I had a moment to think about it. I have watched a senior really grow up this year. I was pretty hard on him when he was a sophomore because of lack of effort always looking for the easy way out. He did not come out last year. He came back this year and we spoke at the beginning of the season. He has been one of my best guys on defense. Now we talk everyday and he jokes about how I was right about him when he was younger and I see how he is growing into a young man. This is why we do what we do...... its the small victories. Good luck on turning it around keep working.... we will!

Yesterday I gave the I'm not quitting on you, so you better not quit on me speech. We're 1-4 right now, and probably shouldn't even have gotten the 1. Last year we went 1-9 but competed. 2 losses were in overtime, and a bunch more were by a TD or less. There were only 2 games we got massacred in. This year, all of our losses have been by 30 points or more.

I hear you coach. Something to remember to is that it's not about how good you are, it's about how good the people you play are. I coach at a 2A school in Indiana. We should be 1A, but got screwed on realignment..long story. Either way, the previous two years, we had the best records in school history. (Schools only been playing football for 10 years total.) We had gotten up to 40 players and were loaded with sophomores and juniors who had 2-3 years of varsity experience. You'd think we would be in good shape. Well, before the season started, we had 3 seniors quit, 3 juniors quit, and 1 sophomore move to a different school. 2 of 3 seniors would have started and had started previously. All 3 juniors had and would have started. The sophomore would have started too. We were still expecting to be pretty good. We changed defenses to get some more of our speedier guys on the field as we lost some of our bigger guys to graduation. We play the D well like you said 95% of the time, but the 5% we don't looks atrocious. However, of our first 6 games, we've played 4 that were either ranked or were receiving votes to be in the top ten. The first game was against the now #1 in class 1A. The second was against a team that has only lost 1 game all year. The third team has a 6'2" 240 RB going at least D2 in some capacity. We beat the 4th and 5th teams easily, before getting beat by another team that has only lost 1 game and has a kid with a full ride to Ball State. (Kid ran for 415 yards in the 1st half before hurting a shoulder in the 3rd. Score was a wild 71-60 loss.) Throughout the course of these games, we looked real good at times and other times real bad. However, we had been improving and looked like a solid team. We just lack some people in certain positions that hold us back. It has been real discouraging to our coaching staff as we feel like we've over-achieved and underachieved. However, I think that is one of the beautiful things about coaching. The struggle is what keeps us coming back. If it were easy, everybody would be doing it. Keep your head up and finish through the grind. Keep doing things right and they will eventually turn around. When they do, you can sit back and take pride in your hard work. It'll be worth it.

Saw some of your film, and you guys looked pretty solid compared to what it was. I lost a bet on you guys not beating Mitchell. That was a tough one for a lot of people around these parts.

That was a tough one for a lot of people around these parts. You and me both. Weather killed us that night. They were too big for us to push and it was too sloppy for us to get much going outside. Oh well. We've come a long way in a short period of time. See how far we can take it.

Its a process! Your kids need to mature, grow as people before they grow as football players. DONT NAG, but just keep doing it over and over and over....preach the positive..correct the mistake...w/o pointing out all the other times he has done it wrong.

Good point on positivity. What kills me is the kids know what they do wrong. We got blown out on homecoming by a team that was probably better, but not 40 points better. I asked the kids what they thought the biggest difference was. I got 2 great answers. "They played with effort and we didn't." "Their kids did what they were coached to do, and we never do."

Wait 1 more year We had the same issue last year this year we are deep with G12's and all systems are a go (4-0, with 3 games allowing less than 3pts/ game) It is a time thing that is all.. Once you start to get a cycle of lots of 11's and 12's you will be rolling.

Going through growing pains with such a young group has been tough. Tonight, we have a very winnable game, so here is to hoping.

I totally agree with the kylem56 post. This is critical...show those practice video's to the kids, and be honest with them. If they aren't doing things right in practice, don't expect them to suddenly turn the corner on game day.
What you tolerate you encourage!!
