I'm assistant offensive coach for 11-13 yr old Pop Warner team. We have started out 3-1 against weaker teams in our league. Our OC coaches both our team and local Middle school team. He seems to have enough knowledge and been around our organization for several years with no complaints, but I'm beginning to think he is not that great of a coach. We have 8 different offensive formations and over 60 plays if you count going right/left. After 4 games we still have players not sure where to line up and receivers running wrong routes. We really haven't established a series-based offense, instead it just seems to be a collection of plays that don't seem to compliment each other. A few work well but again, but we really only played one tough opponent and we got killed 32-0 with 32 yards of total offense. The next few games are against tougher opponents and are important for us to advance to the play-offs.
The OC always gets to practice late (coming from Middle school) and basically says the kids aren't talented enough. I did check out one of his Middle school games and their offense didn't seem to work any better for him. Our Head Coach is beginning to get a little frustrated, his suggestions seem to fall on deaf ears of our OC. I want to break in and get our team on track but it will most likely cause the OC to get upset and really drive a wedge in our staff. The HC is also reluctant as well.
My question is this, is there a way to either take away the OC's role and step in, or get him to completely change his offense without causing problems and hard feelings? I've been coaching at this level for 5 years and never encountered a more difficult situation than this.
