We think we have a pretty good team heading into this year, 7 or 8 starters back on each side of the ball. Kids working hard, doing all the right things. Then it begins:
Starting Will backer (who got hurt and missed most of last season) is not back due to the injury Starting Sam backer's family moves right before the first game (over an hour away) QB goes down just before the half in the first game (we blow a lead and lose late by 3) All State RB/LB goes down early in first quarter of game 2---done for the year ACL--also was the punter Best DL goes down before halftime of game 2---misses next 3 games Backup RB down before halftime of game 2--will miss at least 4 games (we then move HB to RB to replace him and WR to HB) Best remaining WR goes down in game 3--will miss at least 3 games One of 2 top DBs goes down in game 3---will miss at least 3 games DB who replaced him goes down in game 4--will miss at least 2 games Other WR goes down in game 4---will miss at least 2 games Best OL goes down in game 4--will miss at least 2 games HB who moved to RB goes down in game 5---will miss 5 to 6 weeks That doesn't even count the backup SS out for a month, the kicker with a concussion from a soccer game, the backup lineman out a couple of weeks or the regular stuff that everybody has.
We started with less than 40 kids on varsity....there's not a lot left and nothing to pick up off the JV team. I mean, is this ridiculous, or what?

When you lose your kicker to a soccer concussion it is time to circle the wagons! LOL!!!

Somebody's loading the balls with lead. What a horrible run of luck.

in 2006 we had a total of 26 players miss at least 1 full game. in week 10, we had 6 players STARTING that began the year on the JV. Weeks 9 & 10 were the only successive weeks where we had the same 5 OL starting.
how did it end? we lost 10 games - 4 in OT - and the staff was fired.

21 out of 28 players missed a game due to injury. Went 3-7 and got fired. All 3 wins were against playoff teams.

I feel your pain. A very similar and bizarre string of injuries is hitting our high school program this year...for some reason it's only our top players that are getting hurt.
The 6 best players in our program suffered season ending injuries BEFORE our week 2 game! 4 broken bones, an acl/mcl and an "infected vertebrae"!?! At least the players replacing them are younger players that will gain valuable game experience for the following season.

I read this thread and have found at least 50 pieces of wood to knock on since. I have this paranoia that this thread is like the video in "the ring" in 7 days I'm gonna lose a whole starting backfield

That's all you can do, dcohio. We're coaching up what we've got left. The idea of next man up is running thin, however....especially since we're losing most of these players during the toughest part of our schedule.

that's tough luck. We lost our best offensive weapon (3 year starter at RB with a FBS verbal commit) and our best defensive player to ACL tears before we played our first game. All you can do is coach the hell out of the rest of your kids and be a good teacher. Keep things simple. Unfortunate series of events like you are talking about can be used as a good lesson in overcoming adversity.

Seasons like this are anomalies, but reinforce how we should coach each season: prepare every kid to excel.

Very unfortunate. Time for damage control. If possible, tone down the practices...you dont want even more kids getting hurt where it can be avoided.

Yep. I've been through that before and kind of going through a little of that now. When it rains.... I like 5wide's idea of scaling back some things if at all possible. Stay healthy, coach up the young guys and finish the year with things to build on.

Last Friday we were down to our 5th string runningback. In a run first pro style offense. Our 5th string RB is our FB who just got back from injury halfway through the week.
we lost.
I hear ya and feel your pain brotha.

Stay healthy, coach up the young guys and finish the year with things to build on. We've been scaled down. We don't hit in practice....defense used to get one day of tackling circuit for about 10 minutes but that's gone now. We only lost one of these kids in practice, and it was a fluke where he was running, stepped wrong and hurt himself with no one near him. To make it worse, we played the 3 best teams on our schedule the last three weeks through the heart of this---so we got drilled each week. Kids played hard, just had no chance.

Been there, done that, got the t-shirt. It's brutal, and I feel for you. There is an element of randomness to this sport on the injury front that we just don't control. When I think back to the years when I have won championships, those seasons tend to have one common theme - we were ridiculously healthy at the end of the year with no major injury problems. I have had other seasons where, like you, about a third of the team goes down, and it is always a kid you needed.
I had one year where I lost 12 kids from a 36 player roster. This is Canada, where we have to find 12 starters. To make it even tougher, it was a platoon league, meaning I couldn't run our best kids both ways. Essentially, by year's end, any kid who was standing upright was starting. We managed to win the Consolation Final (Our QB was a stud, and he miraculously stayed healthy) but the run of injuries was comical. By halfway through the year, our entire starting linebacker group was done for the season, and we were training up some former defensive ends and defensive backs for the job. Yeah, that was fun...

We started with less than 40 kids on varsity....there's not a lot left and nothing to pick up off the JV team. I mean, is this ridiculous, or what? Yes I have. Last year, my first coaching a team in Denmark, we started the season with maybe 25 or 26 guys. On the first play from scrimmage, we ran a reverse to our star WR, and he was lost until with final game of the year with a dislocated collarbone (crazy injury, huh? Didn't know it can happen...but it did). Soon after, our top running back broke some ribs, and didn't play again that season. Our QB hurt his shoulder, which knocked him out until 3 or 4 games left in the year. Our backup QB came in, and on his first or second play from scrimmage, we fumbled the snap, he dove on the ball and re-broke his surgically repaired wrist - out for the season. And trust me, we weren't exactly going 5 deep at the QB position... I can't remember the rest of the details, but out of 22 starters we had something like 11 of them leave with injury (we were starting some guys both ways, so it may have only been 7 or 8 actual injuries, I can't remember). I refer to that day as "Black Sunday." I have never seen anything like it before, and hope I never do again... It started off a season where we often finished games with only 14 or so players (more injuries happened as the healthy guys were more stressed), and we struggled to a 2-8 record. We scored 52 points all year and those two victories were by a total of 18-0. Silver lining? We came together as a team, and although there are plenty of other variables, we ended up finishing 8-2 with a share of the league championship this year. So there is hope...

If you coach long enough you will have seasons (plural) like that. Happened to all of us gray hairs.

Closest I got to a season like this was when our starting QB went down the day before our very first game of the season. Tore his ACL and done for the year. Ended up going 3-7. Thankfully no other studs got hurt that year.

I feel your pain newpride. 8th grade team here. Decent sized school, started the year with 34 players. Three broken arm/ hands. 2 major concussions, a complete mcl tear, a golf cart accident, and various other less major injuries sent us into a game with 23 players dressed for action. At various times included in these injuries were #1 and #2 QB/#1 WR, #1 and #2 RB, 3 top OLine, #1 Safety, #2 safety/#3 QB, #1 CB, and a Starting DE. We are also a school that is expected to 2 platoon and play the HS system. It has been a challenge to say the least. It appears that we have persevered the worst of it (knock on wood), have come out of that stretch 3-3, and most of the injured have returned or will this week. Without question the best practice we have had all year was yesterday in which QB, WR, both RB, 2 OL, Safety, and DE all practiced.
