winning is retention...if you think making jokes, doing updowns and pizza substitute for winning, your mistaken. KIDS INHERENTYLY WANT TO WIN....ITS THE ADULTS who teach that winning isn't important...and its a load of crap. I don't believe that. This is my 7th season coaching and my 4th at the 7th and 8th grade level. I've had 8th grade kids who have played 4 years and never won. I've had juniors in HS who have gone 0-fer... But they keep coming back. Why? Because they love the game and had a good experience with the lower level coaches. I've also seen the opposite. I've seen kids drop from an 8-0 team because the coach was a thingy... I am sure their are exceptsions to the rule...I have a boss who doesn't make do anything and is my "best friend"....GREAT GUY...(cough,Cough)....The store is going downhill( I work over 3 nights a week and teach)....The guy who trained was not easy to please and we were friends, but he made me better..... I see the same thing in the youth league, at the high school level....Lots of kids will come out and be just part of the team if nothing is required...But that is not what is best for the kids...Winning is GOOD FOR KIDS. Learning how to win is even better for them.....I don't care if they 6 or 21.

They truely love the game and that is because? is there is a chance its because the coach doesn't have clue? Just yelling "block somebody"....Lots of coaches have no idea how to win.....

Which is why we don't just have anyone coaching. We want coaches, not ex players, not dads, but coaches people who know how to coach. Our 8 year old coach is the perfect example. Hes a teacher by trade but also has coached at all levels of football. That team is going to lose a lot this year. But the way those kids talk and act, I know they are coming back

Those kids know/believe they are going to win if they do what he says.....Winning is important and why kids come back.

Great discussion and points. I believe there are different kinds of "wins". Obviously on the scoreboard at the end of the game is the one everybody sees and wants. But what about the young man who executes his assignment every down? The guy who finally gets that KO block we have been looking for? The safety who is walking up into the box, reads pass and steps in front of the TE for the INT? Those are all "wins" in my book. Learning the game comes a step at a time, you can't take the elevator. Every step that is taken and perfected is a win for my guys and I make sure they know that. The more they understand about the game the more they will enjoy it. Think about it....How much fun have you ever had doing anything when you had no clue what was going on???
